IPL 2025: Marcus Stoinis, a 35-year-old Australian cricketer and Punjab Kings all-rounder, has decided to focus solely on T20 cricket.
Inspired by veterans like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Faf du Plessis, Stoinis aims to extend his career by following their example. He surprised many by retiring from ODIs before the Champions Trophy, but he believes this choice will help him play longer.

Stoinis is eager to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will feature. He remains committed to playing T20 internationals for Australia. "Yeah, absolutely. I still am going to be available to play international cricket for Australia in the T20 format," he confirmed. The decision to step back from ODIs was made after careful thought, allowing him more time for T20s.
Admiring the fitness and performance of players like Du Plessis and Dhoni, Stoinis sees them as role models. "I really enjoy the cricket side of things, but I also enjoy the lifestyle of being healthy, being ready to go," he said. Their ability to excel at an older age inspires him to pursue a long career in cricket.
Stoinis finds motivation in the longevity of athletes like Dhoni and Du Plessis. "Faf and Dhoni have set a nice blueprint for me," he noted. Their success at maintaining high performance levels despite their age encourages him to aim for similar achievements.
The Impact Player rule in IPL has raised concerns among all-rounders like Stoinis. He shares the views of Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma that it limits opportunities for multi-skilled players. "To be honest, I think it does diminish the usefulness of an all-rounder," Stoinis remarked.
Stoinis believes that developing all-rounders should be a priority for Indian cricket. The current rule makes it challenging for such players to secure spots unless used as impact players. He feels this could hinder the growth of young talents with diverse skills.
Stoinis supports BCCI's decision to impose two-year bans on overseas players who withdraw last minute from IPL commitments. This rule aims to ensure teams can rely on their chosen players without unexpected disruptions. "Look, once you're committed and in such a big competition...the ban does make sense," he stated.
Stoinis emphasises the importance of commitment in major tournaments like IPL. The ban is seen as a necessary measure to maintain fairness and stability within teams, provided it considers individual circumstances.
Despite not playing Test cricket, Stoinis remains enthusiastic about his future in T20s and the potential return of cricket to the Olympics after 128 years excites him greatly. His focus now is on maintaining fitness and performance levels akin to those of seasoned players like Dhoni and Du Plessis.
