‘Massive Impact’: Harmanpreet Kaur Credits WPL For Improving Women’s T20 Ahead of World Cup

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in England and Wales in June, Indian women's team captain Harmanpreet Kaur recently highlighted the impact of the Women's Premier League (WPL) on T20 cricket for Indian women's cricket. The women in blue were crowned the champions in the 50-over format, defeating the South African team in the final.

Now, as they begin preparations for yet another trophy, this time the T20I format, Kaur has shared the importance of franchise-based cricket on women's cricket and how it has helped in shaping the mindset of the girls as they prepare for the World Cup.

How WPL Has Helped Women's Team In T20 Cricket?

Harmanpreet Kaur gave credit to the growth of the Women's team in the shortest format to the Women's Premier League (WPL), which is modelled on the same franchise-based system as the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"WPL played a very good role in improving women's cricket. If you look at the attitude of our team, it has completely changed now. We have won the ICC title only after three additions," Harmanpreet Kaur said, speaking during the launch event of the Harmanpreet Kaur stand built by Omaxe.

The Indian Women's team captain further said that, "So I think WPL is going to play a very good role in the future. Hopefully, WPL will continue to support us like this, and we will keep winning ICC titles."

Transition Started By IPL

The IPL has often been described as a game-changer for cricket, playing a crucial role in raising the overall standard of the sport. It has not only helped players improve individually but has also contributed significantly to the growth of men's cricket, enabling teams to reach a level where they can consistently compete for and win major tournaments, including back-to-back World Cups.

In modern cricket, success depends heavily on how effectively a team evolves at different stages-whether it's developing young talent, strengthening the bench, or adapting to high-pressure situations. Platforms like franchise leagues have made this transition smoother by exposing players to top-level competition early in their careers.

Similarly, the Women's Premier League (WPL) has had a notable impact, not just on women's cricket but also indirectly on the broader cricketing ecosystem. It has helped shift the mindset and attitude within teams, fostering greater confidence, professionalism, and a winning mentality. This cultural change is evident in recent successes, including ICC title victories that have come after key improvements and additions to the squad.
