Matheesha Pathirana Fitness Update: Will KKR pacer make his debut against LSG?

Kolkata Knight Riders' dismal IPL 2026 campaign received a timely boost with the arrival of Matheesha Pathirana, the slingy Sri Lankan pacer snapped up for a whopping ₹18 crore in the auction after being released by Chennai Super Kings.

Pathirana, renowned for his unique action and death-over prowess, missed the early season due to a calf/muscle strain sustained during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. He cleared mandatory fitness tests and received his NOC around April 12, joining the KKR camp by April 18. Videos and franchise updates show him integrating at Eden Gardens, bowling in nets, and settling in.

Matheesha Pathirana Fitness Update Will KKR pacer make debut against LSG

Current Availability Status

KKR’s bowling has been a major weakness, contributing to their 1-5-1 record and bottom-table position. Injuries and inconsistent performances from the pace unit have left them vulnerable. Pathirana’s addition addresses the death-bowling gap, complementing spinners like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy.

Reports indicate he is “set to debut against LSG” in some circles, potentially replacing an underperforming all-rounder or a seamer. However, official confirmation is pending final fitness assessment by KKR’s medical team after training sessions.

Matheesha Pathirana - Positive KKR Addition

Pathirana’s slingy pace and yorker ability make him a lethal weapon in the death overs — exactly where KKR have struggled this season. His presence could transform the attack against LSG’s explosive batters like Rishabh Pant and Nicholas Pooran.

Without him, KKR continue to rely on Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi, and overseas options like Blessing Muzarabani. His inclusion would significantly boost confidence in this must-win scenario to keep playoff hopes alive.

Will Matheesha Pathirana play against LSG?

Highly likely but not guaranteed. By April 26 (roughly 8 days after joining the squad), Pathirana should be match-ready if his net sessions have gone well. Training performance and final medical clearance on match day will decide his inclusion. If KKR management look to break their winning combination and play the Sri Lanka pacer, he may make his KKR debut.
