Mayank Yadav Recites Advice From Gautam Gambhir That ‘Stayed’ With Him to His Rise to Selection in India T20 Squad

By MyKhel Staff

Young fast bowler Mayank Yadav's selection for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh marks a significant milestone in his career. His journey has been defined by his raw pace, resilience through injuries, and the crucial guidance he received from Gautam Gambhir during his time at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Mayank first caught attention in IPL 2024, where his fiery bowling spells for LSG showcased his potential as an express pacer. However, his campaign was cut short due to injuries, leading him to months of recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Despite the setbacks, Mayank's hard work paid off, earning him a place in India's T20 squad. Reflecting on his career, Mayank credits a piece of advice from Gautam Gambhir as pivotal.

"Gautam bhaiya had once told me that there will be players who get multiple chances to prove themselves, and there will be some who get just one opportunity," Mayank shared in an interview. "Those words stayed with me, and I knew when my chance came, I had to make it count."

His struggles during the early days of his career were not limited to injuries. Despite playing for Delhi and being part of an IPL team, Mayank revealed that he didn't even have a shoe sponsor. However, after his impressive IPL debut, offers for sponsorships began to pour in. "The day after my IPL debut, I got offers for my bowling shoes," he recalled.

Mayank's relationship with Gambhir extended beyond this advice. He spoke of Gambhir and former LSG coach Vijay Dahiya preparing him for a delayed debut, assuring him that his time would come after one or two years.

This belief, coupled with his patience and work ethic, helped him seize the opportunity when it finally arrived. Morne Morkel, another influential figure from his time at LSG, also played a role in shaping Mayank's development.

Though Morkel's coaching style is more reserved, focusing primarily on strategies, his guidance helped the young bowler hone his skills. As Mayank steps onto the international stage, the lessons learned from Gambhir and Morkel, along with his sheer determination, are likely to play a crucial role in his continued rise in Indian cricket.
