Melbourne, January 30: The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia will host the finals of the next International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 World Cup which will be held in 2020.

The MCG, which can accommodate more than 1,00,000 spectators had hosted the finals of 1992 and 2015 ICC 50-over World Cups.

The ICC released the venues of both the men's and women's World T20 tournaments.

It will be held in 13 venues across eight cities in Australia and for the first time since its inception, the tournaments will be played as standalone events.

Ten teams will compete in the women's edition to be held from February 21 to March 8 while 16 teams will be in the fray for men's event to be held from October 18 to November 15.

The full schedule for the World T20 tournaments will be announced later.

West Indies are the defending champions in both men's and women's categories.

Sydney, Adelaide Oval, Perth, Geelong's Kardinia Park, Brisbane and Hobart are the venues for men's matches. Sydney and Adelaide will host the semifinals.

Women's group matches will be played Perth, Melbourne's Junction Oval, Canberra's Manuka Oval and Sydney's Spotless Stadium while both the semifinals will be played at Sydney.

Talking about the dual events, ICC Cheif Executive David Richardson said.

"Australia has a proven track record of delivering world-class events in world-class stadiums and we know we can rely on the fans to provide great support for all of the competing teams."

The women's final will take place on International Women's Day 2020, Sunday 8 March, with the aim of creating a world-record attendance for a women's sporting match.

"I would like to thank Cricket Australia and their partners in Government at all levels for their commitment to the ICC World T20 in 2020. The ambition they have shown firstly in delivering stand-alone men's and women's events and then in the venue selection that will, I hope set a record for the biggest ever attendance at a women's sporting event, is exciting for the sport," he added.
