On Sunday (January 17), at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Kohli completed 7,000 runs in ODIs and claimed a record. He reached the milestone in 161 innings (169th match), the fastest (in terms of innings taken) in the world. (Kohli-led Indian team becomes No. 1)

The record was in De Villiers' name after he had scored 7,000 runs in the 50-over format in 166 innings. Today, the 27-year-old Kohli bettered the mark by 5 innings.

Kohli started the 3rd ODI needing 19 runs to reach the landmark. Having arrived at the crease at his usual number 3 spot at the early fall of Rohit Sharma (6), Kohli went past the 7,000-run mark in the 10th over of the innings.

He reached there with a boundary off left-arm paceman James Faulkner. Kohli batted on to register his 24th ODI century. However, the hosts beat India by 3 wickets to claim the series 3-0 with still 2 games remaining.
