Mumbai Indians suffered a close defeat at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday (May 16). With the loss, they remain on 14 points after 13 matches and have been dragged to the 4th place in the table.
With just one match to go this season, the Mumbai Indians will have to win their final match to have any chances for qualification to the playoffs.

The Indian Premier League will see the top four teams advance to the playoffs. The top two (1st, 2nd) placed teams play the Qualifier 1, and the winner of the match directly advances to the final.
Third-placed and Fourth-placed teams will be playing an Eliminator. The loser of this match crashes out of the tournament. The winner of the Eliminator will then play the loser of Qualifier 1, which is known as Qualifier 2.
The winner of Qualifier 2 then goes on to play the Final against the team who already have advanced to the Final after winning Qualifier 1.
Mumbai Indians started their season in their traditional way - with a loss. They lost their first two matches against RCB and CSK. Then they registered three fantastic wins over DC, KKR and SRH.
It was another stutter for two matches as they lost against PBKS and GT, before rallying back again with two wins against RR and PBKS. They have lost their most recent match against CSK and have 10 points after 10 matches.
It has come in clusters for MI this season. When they have won, they have registered two wins at least in a row. And same goes for losses, which so far have come in a pair (2 consecutive losses) for them.
But they broke the streak with a stellar victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday (May 9). And they backed that up with another fantastic victory over the Gujarat Titans on Friday. And as things were looking on course, the defeat against LSG has pegged them back yet again.

Yes, they can. But to finish either 1st or 2nd, the Paltans will have to win their last match and hope CSK, LSG lose their next game, while RCB will also have to lose one of their two games. They will also have to ensure a big victory to further bolster their chances.
It is simple. They need a win to stay in the playoffs. A win means MI will get to 16 points, which can be enough to take them to the playoffs even as ranked 2nd in the table. On the other hand, 16 can also be not enough if CSK, LSG win their matches and RCB win their final two matches.
In that case, despite getting to 16 points, MI will be going out due to an inferior NRR. MI can still overcome RCB in NRR theoretically, but that is highly improbable.
On the other hand, even a defeat can still take them to the playoffs. And in that case, RCB will have to lose both of their matches. RR and KKR will have to lose their matches and PBKS need to lose either both of their matches or win the match against RR and lose against DC.
