MI vs CSK, IPL 2024 Match 29: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 20 runs in Match 29 of the IPL 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday (April 14). The win was Chennai's first away win of the season.
After being asked to bat first Chennai Super Kings posted a 207-run target for Mumbai Indians. Ajinkya Rahane came out to open with Rachin Ravindra but got out for five off eight. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad walked in at three and scored 69 off 40.

His partnership with Rachin (21 off 16) accounted for 52 runs. However, it was Shivam Dube, who gave shape to Chennai's innings. He came out all guns blazing and took special liking for Hardik Pandya and Romario Shepherd to score unbeaten 66 off 38 balls.
Former CSK captain MS Dhoni walked out with just four balls remaining but ended up playing a decisive knock. He dispatched the first three deliveries he faced from Hardik Pandya for a six, and then took a double to score an unbeaten 20 off four and fire CSK to 206/4 in 20 overs.
In reply, Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start courtesy Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. While Rohit Sharma smashed his second IPL hundred (first in 12 years), Ishan scored 23 off 15. The duo partnered for 70 off 43 balls before Matheesha Pathirana dismissed Kishan.
The Sri Lankan slinger then sent Suryakumar Yadav packing for a duck (second in three matches). Another 60-run partnership between Rohit and Tilak Varma (31 off 20) kept Mumbai in the hunt before Pathirana picked his third wicket in the form of Varma.
Hardik (2) was dismissed by Tushar Deshpande with a short delivery, and Mustafizur Rahman got rid of Tim David (13 off 5) to push Mumbai further out of the match. Pathirana struck for the fourth time when he dismissed the dangerous Romario Shepherd (1).
Rohit completed his eighth T20 hundred with a four on the third ball of the 20th over but a muted celebration followed as the target was well outside Mumbai's reach by then. He finished at an unbeaten 105 off 63 balls.

Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians Captain): "It (target) was definitely gettable, but they bowled pretty well. Pathirana was the difference. They were smart with the plans and their approach. They got the hang of it, there's a man behind the stumps (Dhoni) who tells them what's working, that helps.
"It (pitch) was holding up a bit and getting difficult. It was about batting well and keeping the intent. We were going quite well (in the run chase) till Pathirana came into the attack and took those two wickets. It was about what is best at that time, we could have done something different. I like to play percentage cricket, it would have been difficult for him (Dube) against seamers rather than spin. We are on the road for the next four games, need to play good cricket, need to keep the intensity high."
Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK captain): "The young wicketkeeper scoring those three sixes helped us a lot, that proved to be the difference. We needed those 10-15 extra runs for this kind of venue. In the middle phase, Bumrah bowled really well. I feel we were spot on with our execution with the ball despite them scoring some great shots.
"I would have taken 6 overs 60 at the powerplay. You need to be on the mark with bowling and batting at this venue. Our Malinga bowled really well today, he nailed those yorkers. Not to forget, Tushar and Shardul also did well.
"(On plans ahead) I think we need to keep it simple, encourage all to be in a good headspace and continue the same way. (On Rahane opening) Jinks was carrying a bit of a niggle, so thought it was better for him to open. I'm fine batting anywhere, plus it is the added responsibility as the team captain."
Matheesha Pathirana (Man of the Match): When we were bowling in the powerplay, I was pretty nervous. I was told to keep it calm an do my thing, that gave me the confidence today. I don't think too much about results, just concerned with my execution.
If I execute, I will get my rewards. Sometimes I have to change my plans depending on the batters. I was struggling with a bit of a niggle for two weeks, but the support staff all backed me and that's been the main reason for my form.
