MI vs GT: Shubman Gill frustration peaks as Gujarat Titans drop three catches in Powerplay against Mumbai Indians

MI vs GT: It was a forgettable start for Gujarat Titans in their high-stakes clash against Mumbai Indians as a flurry of fielding errors left captain Shubman Gill visibly seething. In a game that could decide who takes the top spot in the IPL 2025 table.

GT squandered three golden opportunities inside the Powerplay - and the sight of Gill's rare display of frustration painted the perfect picture of the chaos unfolding on the field.

The match had just begun with Mohammed Siraj drawing first blood, removing an in-form Ryan Rickelton in the opening over. However, GT's early momentum was quickly undone by a trio of dropped catches that turned the tide in favour of the five-time champions.

The first error came in the very first over. Will Jacks, trying to settle in, drove a full delivery from Siraj in the air through covers. Sai Sudharsan - who had earlier pulled off a blinder to dismiss Rickelton - got both hands to the ball but failed to latch on. A frustrated sigh from Gill was visible, but what followed would test his composure further.

Just a few overs later, Suryakumar Yadav flicked a delivery from Prasidh Krishna to mid-wicket, offering a simple chance to R Sai Kishore. But Kishore made a mess of it, attempting a reverse cup that only ended with the ball popping over his hands. The GT bench, including coach Ashish Nehra, looked exasperated - but Gill, still managing to stay calm, had already started showing signs of discontent.

The final straw came in the sixth over. Arshad Khan delivered a back-of-a-length ball which Will Jacks flicked straight to mid-wicket, where Mohammed Siraj was stationed. The ball travelled at catchable height, and Siraj made a complete hash of what should've been a routine take. That was it - Shubman Gill stood with his eyes shut, fists clenched, as if pleading to the cricketing gods for answers.

With those missed opportunities, GT had let MI's dangerous duo off the hook. Jacks and Suryakumar made the most of their lives, taking MI to 56-2 at the end of six overs and tilting the momentum towards the home side.

"We've spoken about fielding being the difference in close games. Dropping three inside six overs isn't acceptable at this level," Gill was heard saying on the stump mic, keeping his voice measured, but his body language told the true story.

In a match where both MI and GT entered level on 14 points, fighting to leapfrog Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the top, these errors could prove costly. Mumbai Indians, with the best net run-rate in the league, are known for capitalising on such gifts - and with SKY and Jacks still at the crease, they looked set to make GT pay dearly.
