MI vs KKR: Ashwani Kumar, a 23-year-old left-arm seamer is making his debut for the Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Known for his lethal pace variations and composure under pressure, Ashwani's journey from Punjab's domestic circuit to the grand IPL stage has been nothing short of remarkable.

Ashwani's primary strength lies in his deceptive range of deliveries. From cutters and slow bouncers to wide yorkers and floating full-tosses, his arsenal is tailor-made for the shortest format of the game. His ability to bowl deliveries that stick to the surface and catch batters off-guard makes him an invaluable asset in death overs. He has quickly gained a reputation for delivering in high-pressure situations.
Despite making his First-Class debut for Punjab at 18, his List-A debut at 20, and his senior T20 debut at 21, Ashwani remained relatively under the radar until the launch of Punjab's own T20 league, the Sher E Punjab T20 Trophy. It was here that his talent became impossible to ignore.
In a 2023 match between BLV Blasters and Agri King's Knights, Ramandeep Singh made headlines by smashing six sixes in an over. However, the real story was Ashwani's nerves of steel. Defending eight runs in the final over, he gave away just two singles, two byes, and claimed a crucial wicket, securing a thrilling three-run victory.
Ashwani's resilience was evident once again in the following match. Despite conceding 33 runs in his first two overs, he was entrusted with the final over, needing to defend 11 runs. Mixing wide yorkers with slower balls, he restricted the opposition to 10 runs, winning the game by a single run. His final figures of 3 overs for 42 runs may not have reflected his match-winning impact, but his clutch performances became the backbone of BLV Blasters' title-winning campaign.
Ashwani finished the 2023 Sher E Punjab season with eight wickets from 10 matches, often being the deciding factor in close encounters. His stellar performances earned him a spot in the Agri King's Knights for the 2024 edition. In one standout performance, defending 25 runs in the penultimate over, he bowled pinpoint yorkers to claim two wickets and conceded just five runs.
His exploits caught the attention of the Punjab selectors, earning him a recall for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. Representing Punjab under captain Abhishek Sharma, Ashwani continued his fine form with figures of 1-19 against Meghalaya. His efforts also secured him a place in Punjab's Vijay Hazare Trophy squad, where he impressed with a 3-37 spell against Arunachal.
Ashwani's skill set and temperament make him an exciting prospect for the Mumbai Indians. With the ability to deliver under pressure and outthink batters, he could prove to be a game-changer in the IPL.
