MI vs KKR: Mumbai Indians opened their account in IPL 2025 with a dominant eight-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. After two consecutive defeats, the five-time champions delivered a commanding performance, chasing a modest target of 117 in just 12.5 overs.
Unheralded left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar stole the limelight on his IPL debut, picking up four wickets for 24 runs, the best figures by an Indian bowler in his first IPL match. Ashwani's dream debut set the tone for Mumbai's victory.

The 23-year-old pacer from Punjab struck with the first ball of his IPL career, removing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane. He then returned to dismiss Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey in the 11th over before knocking over Andre Russell's stumps after the West Indian had smashed him for a six.
His fiery spell, complemented by early breakthroughs from Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, saw KKR collapse to 116 all out. Mumbai's disciplined bowling effort ensured no partnerships flourished, with only Angkrish Raghuvanshi (32) showing some resistance before falling to Hardik Pandya.
In response, Mumbai made light work of the chase, thanks to a composed knock from Ryan Rickelton. The South African opener top-scored with an unbeaten 62 off 41 balls, pacing his innings smartly after the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Will Jacks. Suryakumar Yadav provided the finishing touches with a quickfire 27 off just nine balls, ensuring Mumbai cruised home with 43 balls to spare. The win not only lifted MI from the bottom of the points table but also provided a significant boost to their Net Run Rate.
Captain Hardik Pandya credited the franchise's scouting team for identifying Ashwani Kumar, highlighting his ability to generate pace and late swing. Mumbai's decision to field him on a lively Wankhede surface paid off handsomely as the young pacer delivered under pressure. KKR, on the other hand, suffered their second defeat of the season and dropped to the last position in the standings.
With this emphatic victory, Mumbai Indians will head to Lucknow for their next game against the Super Giants on April 4, while Kolkata will return home to face SunRisers Hyderabad on April 3.
