MI vs KKR: What was turning point of match as Mumbai pacers justify their captain's call?

By MyKhel Staff

MI vs KKR Turning Point: Mumbai Indians registered their first win of IPL 2025 in emphatic fashion, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets at Wankhede Stadium on March 31.

The turning point of the contest came early, as MI's pace attack left KKR in complete disarray, reducing them to four wickets down inside the powerplay. With their middle order exposed far too soon, KKR found themselves unable to recover, succumbing to ill-advised stroke play that only compounded their woes.

MI vs KKR Turning Point IPL 2025

While MI's bowling unit executed their plans to perfection, KKR's batters played into their hands with a series of reckless shots, failing to show the temperament needed to rebuild after early setbacks.

It all began with Trent Boult, who yet again showcased his ability to strike in the first over. Sunil Narine was the first to go, his stumps uprooted by a beautiful inswinging delivery. At the other end, Deepak Chahar stuck to a disciplined line, keeping the dangerous Quinton de Kock quiet before forcing him into a mistimed shot that found its way to mid-off. With two key wickets down inside three overs, the pressure on KKR mounted, and it only got worse with the introduction of IPL debutant Ashwani Kumar.

The young left-arm pacer had a dream debut, dismissing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with his very first ball. Rahane's dismissal was not just a huge breakthrough for MI but also an ominous sign for KKR, who were banking on his experience to steady the innings.

As KKR looked to counterattack, their aggressive approach backfired. Venkatesh Iyer was undone by a well-directed short ball from Chahar, and by the end of the powerplay, KKR had already lost four wickets. From that moment on, the match firmly tilted in Mumbai's favour.

With KKR in survival mode, the onus fell on Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey to salvage the innings, but their efforts were short-lived. Ashwani returned in the 11th over and struck twice in quick succession, removing Rinku and Manish with clever changes in pace and length.

While Rinku had just found the boundary with an audacious shot, he perished attempting another big hit, caught at deep point. Manish followed soon after, cramped for room and clean bowled.

The biggest moment of the match, however, came when Ashwani dismissed Andre Russell, who was KKR's last hope for a fightback. Having been hit for a massive six, the youngster responded with a sharp bouncer that forced Russell into an awkward position before delivering a rapid full-length ball that crashed into the stumps. KKR were bundled out for a mere 116, a total that was never going to challenge MI on their home turf.

Chasing 117, MI lost Rohit Sharma early, continuing his rough patch, but Ryan Rickelton ensured there were no hiccups. The South African batter settled in after a scratchy start, growing in confidence with each over. A controlled innings of 62* off 41 balls saw MI cruise to victory, with Suryakumar Yadav sealing the win in the 13th over.

This performance not only gave MI their first points of the season but also sent a warning to their rivals. More importantly, it was a validation of their captain Hardik Pandya's faith in his pace attack, as his bowlers proved decisive in dismantling KKR early and ensuring a commanding victory.
