MI vs KKR: Why is Rohit Sharma not playing against Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai?

By MyKhel Staff

MI vs KKR: Mumbai Indians fans were left speculating about Rohit Sharma's absence from the playing XI against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium on March 31.

The former MI captain has struggled for form in the last two matches, registering scores of 0 against Chennai Super Kings and 8 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

On both occasions, Rohit fell to inswingers that breached his defenses and rattled the stumps. However, despite concerns over his form, the decision to leave him out of the initial XI was more strategic than performance-related as Mumbai Indians are yet to register their first win of the season.

At the toss, Hardik Pandya confirmed that Mumbai Indians had not made any changes to their lineup, which meant that the team management had planned to utilize Rohit Sharma as an Impact Player.

With MI opting to bowl first after winning the toss, the team included additional bowlers in the XI, prioritizing a strong bowling attack in the first innings. This tactical approach allowed them to make the most of any early swing on offer at Wankhede while keeping an experienced batter like Rohit Sharma ready for the chase.

Speaking at the toss, Hardik Pandya explained the reasoning behind choosing to bowl first: "We gonna bowl first, looks like a good track. Knowing Wankhede, dew may or may not come in. There might be some early swing, it plays well so we thought chasing is a good option. We want to get into good rhythm and kickstart. Overall, we want to play better cricket, we need to stay calm. Will Jacks comes back and we have a debutant - Ashwani Kumar."

With Ashwani Kumar making his debut and Vignesh Puthur also in the lineup, it is likely that one of these players will be substituted when MI begins their chase, allowing Rohit Sharma to take the field. The Impact Player rule enables teams to swap out a bowler or an all-rounder for a specialist batter, and MI is expected to make this switch to bolster their batting depth in the second innings.

While fans may have initially been surprised by Rohit Sharma's absence, Mumbai Indians' tactical move ensures they maximize their resources, keeping their most experienced batter fresh for the crucial run chase.
