MI vs LSG, IPL 2024 Match 67: Mumbai Indians (MI) lost their last match of the IPL 2024 by 18 runs against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday, May 17.
After being asked to bat first, Lucknow scored 214/6 in 20 overs. They were three down for 69 in 9.3 overs, but a 75-run knock off 29 balls from Nicholas Pooran fired LSG to a 200-plus total in their final game of the season. Captain KL Rahul also chipped in with 55 runs off 41 balls. Nuwan Thushara and Piyush Chawla picked three wickets apiece.

In reply, the opening pair of Dewald Brevis (23 off 20) and Rohit Sharma (68 off 38) collected 53 runs in the powerplay. At the end of eight overs, the five-time champions were well poised at 78/0 but the wicket of Brevis in the following over took the MI innings downhill.
Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a 3-ball duck by Krunal Pandya in the 10th over, while Ravi Bishnoi picked the big wicket of
Rohit in the 11th over. Hardik Pandya (16), Nehal Wadhera (1), and Ishan Kishan (14) also departed cheaply.
Naman Dhir (62* off 28) slammed a 25-ball fifty to take the match deep, but Mumbai Indians still fell short of the target by 18 runs. Dhir smashed five sixes including one on the final ball of the match. Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the 10-team points table with just four wins in 14 matches. Lucknow Super Giants finished with seven wins.

Hardik Pandya (MI Captain): “Quite difficult. Did not play good quality cricket, eventually costed us the whole season. It's a professional world. Have to always come out and put our best foot forward. But yes, as a group we could not play quality cricket or smart cricket. Too early to point out what went wrong. The whole season kind of went wrong. We can pass this game as another one (that went wrong).”
KL Rahul (LSG captain): “Very disappointing. At the beginning of the season, I really felt we had a strong team and had most bases covered. Couple of injuries - happens to every team. We didn't play well enough collectively. Today was a really good performance.
“This is the kind of game we wanted to play more. Unfortunately we didn't do that. Really happy for them. Franchise has invested a lot of time and energy with them (Indian pacers in LSG). It's not just two months in the year. We sent Mayank and Yudhvir to South Africa to train with Morne Morkel. Hard work for them has paid off, but franchise and the team has worked a lot with them. I'm not sure.
“There's not much T20 cricket coming up now. It's been a season where I've learnt a lot about my own batting and what I need to do to get back in the team. Maybe middle-order, maybe not. We would've ideally wanted him (Pooran) to bat higher, but with how the team's lined up, we want our senior international players bat in positions where they can absorb pressure. Didn't want our two overseas batters to bat close together. (On asked about his Dream11 ad with Rohit Sharma and father-in-law Suniel Shetty) I'm on my father in law's team now. We'll both be cheering for Sharma ji ka beta in the World Cup.”
Nicholas Pooran (Man of the Match): “For me personally I felt I had to do my job. Finishing the innings has been challenging sometimes especially in Lucknow. I have been practising for a number of years and it's about putting together all the experience and make it count.
“I have batted at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 but if I had to choose I like the powerplay. I can't be selfish and the beauty of my batting is I can bat at any position. I'm just blessed and I have a second chance to play this game again. Back then 8 years back when I had an accident I thought I will enjoy the game and grateful that teams supported me and backed me and it's only fair from me to give enjoyment back to them.
“(Thoughts moving now to the T20 World Cup for West Indies) It's definitely gonna move there. It's at home and we are looking forward to it. The last couple of years have been difficult for the men from the Caribbean and we are looking forward to doing something special for the people back home.”
