MI vs LSG IPL 2026: Rohit Sharma Makes A Comeback In Style, Scores 4th Fastest Half Century!

Rohit Sharma’s long-awaited return for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 came against Lucknow Super Giants as an Impact Substitute, three weeks after a hamstring injury, lifting a side stuck in ninth place and energising a loud Wankhede Stadium crowd that had watched Mumbai lose seven of nine league games so far.

The match itself carried high stakes for the Mumbai Indians, who went into the contest with only five league fixtures left to revive fading playoff chances after a poor start. Lucknow Super Giants added pressure by putting up 228/5 in 20 overs, leaving Mumbai to chase 229 in front of demanding home supporters.

IPL 2026: Rohit Sharma Makes Comeback After Injury

Rohit Sharma had not played since 12 April, when a hamstring issue forced an exit during the clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and the setback ruled Rohit out of five straight matches, including both meetings with Chennai Super Kings and one each against Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The absence of the former Mumbai Indians captain coincided with a sharp slide in results, and the side’s record of seven defeats from nine outings placed serious strain on the campaign. With every remaining game crucial, Rohit’s return was seen within the camp and outside as a timely boost to a misfiring batting order.

Uncertainty over Rohit Sharma’s fitness had stretched for weeks, so tension inside Wankhede Stadium eased only when Suryakumar Yadav confirmed the news at the toss. “Cobin Bosch comes in for Trent Boult, and also our very own Rohit Sharma is back,” Suryakumar said, and the announcement triggered loud chants around the stands.

The cheers grew as spectators processed that Rohit would finally take part again, even though the role was limited. As an Impact Substitute, Rohit stayed off the field during the Lucknow innings and was set to feature mainly with the bat, a precaution after more than three weeks recovering from the hamstring strain.

IPL 2026: How Has Rohit Sharma Fared This Season?

Across the four IPL 2026 matches Rohit Sharma had already played before the injury, the opener scored 137 runs with one half-century, averaging 45.66 and striking at 165.06, numbers that underlined why the Mumbai Indians were keen to ease Rohit back, even in a controlled Impact Substitute capacity.

However, all that changed against Lucknow Super Giants as he brought up his fourth fastest half-century of the IPL.
