MI vs SRH: The electric atmosphere at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday night bore witness to yet another gripping IPL encounter as Mumbai Indians edged past Sunrisers Hyderabad by 4 wickets in Match 33 of the Indian Premier League 2025.

Chasing a competitive target of 163, the five-time champions kept their nerve amid pressure thanks to a sublime all-round performance from Englishman Will Jacks, who played a match-defining role with both bat and ball to guide the hosts home in 18.1 overs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Pat Cummins, had their moments in the contest - particularly with the ball - but failed to capitalise on early breakthroughs. Despite a valiant 40 from Abhishek Sharma and a late surge by Klaasen, SRH's total of 162/5 proved just under par on a lively Wankhede pitch.

As the Mumbai crowd roared in delight, it was Will Jacks who stole the show with a powerful 36-run blitz and two key wickets, earning him the Player of the Match award and keeping MI firmly in the playoff race.

SRH’s Inning: A Battle of Grit and Gaps

Opting to bat first, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a modest 162/5 from their allotted 20 overs. The innings started on a promising note with Abhishek Sharma taking charge early on. He raced to 40 off just 28 deliveries, smashing seven boundaries and a maximum, before a miscue off Hardik Pandya found the safe hands of substitute Raj Bawa in the eighth over.

Travis Head looked dangerous during his short stay, but his 28-run knock ended when Mitchell Santner stationed at deep midwicket took a fine catch off Will Jacks. Ishan Kishan struggled to get going and perished for 2, as Rickelton’s gloves proved safe off another delivery from Jacks.

Nitish Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen stitched together a brief partnership, but just as SRH looked to accelerate, Mumbai’s pace battery struck. Klaasen’s 37 off 28, featuring three sixes, gave some respectability to the innings, but Jasprit Bumrah’s pinpoint yorker sent his stumps cartwheeling in the 19th over.

SRH ended at 162/5, a total that seemed just a touch under par on a good batting surface. Aniket Verma and skipper Pat Cummins remained unbeaten at the end, but the real work had to be done with the ball.

MI’s Chase: Fire and Fluctuations

The chase was anything but straightforward for Mumbai Indians. Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma gave the hosts a flying start, racing to 32 before Rohit was cleaned up by a sharp delivery from Pat Cummins in the fourth over. The MI skipper had blazed 26 off just 16, lighting up the Wankhede with three classic boundaries and two massive sixes.

Rickelton too fell shortly after, skying one to Head off Harshal Patel. At 69/2, the chase wobbled a bit — but in walked the man of the moment: Will Jacks.

The English all-rounder picked his moments beautifully. He counterattacked with intent, hammering 36 off just 26 balls, including three fours and two sixes, before Zeeshan Ansari took a sharp catch at the boundary off Cummins. His impact, however, had already swung the game back in Mumbai’s favour.

Suryakumar Yadav played a flashy cameo of 26 from 15 balls, but it was Tilak Varma’s calm presence and Pandya’s brief fireworks that sealed the deal. With the finish line in sight, Eshan Malinga dismissed both Pandya and Naman Dhir in quick succession, raising some SRH hopes. But with just one run needed, Mitchell Santner tapped one past point to clinch victory with 11 balls to spare.
