Michael Clarke Makes HUGE Claim, Believes Virat Kohli Will Return To Tests Only On ONE Condition

Australian skipper Michael Clarke has shared a bold prediction regarding Virat Kohli's future in Test cricket. Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket podcast on Friday, Clarke suggested that Kohli may be persuaded to come out of retirement if India endures a heavy defeat in the upcoming five-match Test series against England.

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025, just months after stepping away from T20Is in 2024. With several senior players including Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Mohammed Shami, and Ajinkya Rahane also absent from the squad, newly appointed captain Shubman Gill is tasked with leading a transitional Indian side on English soil.

Despite England's own injury issues, history doesn't favour the visitors-India's last Test series win in England came in 2007.

"I believe this. If India go to England and get flogged, if they lose the series 5-0 for example, I think the fans will want Virat Kohli to come out of retirement and play Test cricket again," Clarke said on the podcast, as quoted by PTI.

"And I honestly, I think if he was asked by the captain, selectors and supported by fans, if they get beaten big time in England, I think he'll come. He still loves Test cricket. I think his words, I think those words, like you could hear his passion for Test cricket is real," Clarke added.

The former Australian captain also noted that while Rohit Sharma's tactical nous would be missed, the absence of Kohli's charisma and dominance would be felt not just by India, but by the entire Test cricket fraternity.

"He (Virat) sees it as the pinnacle and he's still playing good enough cricket. He definitely made the decision to retire and whatever his reasons are, everybody comes to that time in their career," Clarke said, reflecting on the nature of retirement decisions.

"If that's the case, then so be it. But if they don't perform, if they get beaten, like I say, 5-0 in England, which I don't think they will. I think they can still win in England, even without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. I think this Indian squad is a good squad," he added.

India's tour of England will be a significant test for the new leadership core-and possibly a situation that could prompt one of the game's greats to reconsider his decision.
