Mithali Raj Reveals How Marriage Was Once a Possibility, but Now It’s Just Not on Her Radar

Sometimes, the best things in life come to you when you stop searching for them. These words resonate deeply with the journey of Mithali Raj, the former Indian cricketer who captained the national team from 2004 to 2022. She chose to follow her dreams on her own terms rather than conform to societal expectations.

In a world where people often feel pressured to follow certain life paths—marriage, family, and a conventional career—Mithali's story is a reflection of the power of self-belief and the courage to break free from the norms that often define success.

Mithali Raj Reveals How Marriage Was Once a Possibility but Now It s Just Not on Her Radar

Mithali Raj: From Dance to Cricket, Carving Her Own Path and Defying Expectations

Born in the quiet town of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, in 1982, Mithali Raj was destined for greatness. But her journey wasn’t always about cricket. Initially drawn to dancing, she switched paths at a young age and set her sights on something entirely different: cricket. Yes, She is a Bharatanatyam dancer.

From those early days, it was clear that she wasn’t going to follow the expected script. She was carving out her own legacy, one that would eventually earn her accolades like the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri, and the title of the Wisden Leading Woman Cricketer in the World.

Yet, as she established herself as one of the most iconic figures in women’s cricket, another question lingered on the minds of many—why hadn’t she settled down or married by the time she reached the pinnacle of her career?

Mithali Raj: Redefining Success Beyond Marriage and Social Expectations

Her answer is simple yet powerful (via Mid-Day): "Marriage used to cross my mind... long time back, when I was very young. But it doesn't cross my mind now when I see married people. I am very happy being single."

For someone who has spent years leading the Indian women’s cricket team with determination and poise, it’s not surprising that Mithali chose her personal journey over conventional expectations. She didn’t let the pressures of society dictate her choices. At 41, she stands as a woman who redefined success—not just by her cricketing records, but by the courage to follow her own path without fear of judgment.

In an interview with Sportskeeda, she opened up about relationships and the idea of marriage. When asked if she would continue playing cricket after marriage, Mithali responded, "This is something that I have not given a thought about. But yes, if I remain fit and get enough support from my family then, of course, why not!”

What’s even more remarkable is her approach to relationships. Mithali shared her past experiences, but emphasized that her primary focus has always been on her career. When asked if she received the same level of attention as male cricketers from fans, she candidly revealed, "To be honest, I don't really get attention the same way that the men's team gets from their female fans.”

It’s clear that her priorities always rested on staying true to herself and the sport she loved, while making room for the people who truly supported her journey. On June 8, 2022, Mithali Raj decided to hang up her boots and announced her retirement from all formats of international cricket.
