MLC 2024: Washington Freedom vs Texas Super Kings Washed Out After Faf du Plessis Century

By MyKhel Staff

The fifth match of the 2024 Major League Cricket season between Washington Freedom and Texas Super Kings at Church Street Park in Morrisville on Tuesday was unfortunately called off due to rain.

This much-anticipated game saw Washington Freedom chasing a challenging target of 204 runs, reaching 62 for 0 in just four overs before the downpour interrupted play.

Travis Head had a rapid start, scoring 32 runs off 12 balls, while Steve Smith followed closely with 26 runs off 12 balls. The duo looked poised for a strong partnership when the rain halted their progress.

Despite an hour-long wait for the weather to clear, match officials eventually decided to call off the game, resulting in both teams sharing a point each from the rain-affected match.

This encounter was significant as it marked the first instance of any team surpassing 200 runs this season and also the first occurrence of a 200-run total at Church Street Park.

Earlier in the match, Texas Super Kings, led by captain Faf du Plessis, set an impressive total of 203 for 5 in their 20 overs. Du Plessis delivered a stellar performance, scoring a brilliant century off 58 balls.

His innings were marked by aggressive and calculated shots, consistently punishing any loose deliveries from the Washington bowlers. Devon Conway provided crucial support, scoring 39 runs off 26 balls. Together, du Plessis and Conway built a solid 109-run partnership for the opening wicket.

Despite dealing with an injured right hand, Marcus Stoinis contributed a vital 29 runs off 18 balls, further boosting the Texas Super Kings' total. However, Washington Freedom's bowling and fielding were below par, with several dropped catches and missed opportunities that allowed the Texas Super Kings to amass their substantial total.

While the rain ultimately denied what could have been an exciting finish, both teams displayed promising performances. The Washington Freedom's explosive start in their chase and the Texas Super Kings' formidable batting display, particularly from Faf du Plessis, set a high standard for the rest of the season.

Both teams will look to build on these performances as the Major League Cricket season progresses, aiming to secure their positions in the tournament standings.
