Moeen Ali Sends Out 'English Conditions' Warning To India's New Test Captain Ahead Of England Tour

With Rohit Sharma stepping away from red-ball cricket last week, the focus has shifted to who will lead the Indian Test team moving forward.

Among the names being discussed, Shubman Gill appears to be the frontrunner to take over the captaincy. The young batter could begin his stint as Test skipper during the upcoming five-match home series against England, set to commence on June 20.

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has weighed in on the topic, naming Gill as a likely successor. However, he also pointed out the challenges that may come with appointing someone relatively new to leadership at the Test level.

"I think it will be Shubman Gill. Ideally, the BCCI would want Jasprit Bumrah to captain because he is a very good captain, a good leader who has done it before. But because of his injury record, he might not be able to last the whole series," Moeen said during a chat with Sky Sports.

Although Bumrah once led India to victory in a Test match against Australia in Perth when Rohit Sharma was unavailable, questions about his durability have surfaced since he suffered a back issue during the Sydney Test that followed. These injury concerns may prompt the Indian selectors to look for a more stable leadership option for the grueling English series.

Moeen continued, praising Gill's cricketing mind while acknowledging the steep learning curve ahead. "I think they'll give the captaincy to somebody who's done decently so far in Test cricket. Gill leads Gujarat Titans in IPL, so they've still got a very, very good captain, inexperienced, yes, but a good captain and good brain, but it'll be a challenge in the English conditions," he added.

Though Gill has shown promise, his Test stats are yet to fully reflect his potential. He averages 35 across 32 matches, with his away Test numbers dropping to an average of 29. His only overseas century so far came against Bangladesh.

After starting out as an opener, Gill moved into the No. 3 position during India's tour of the West Indies in 2023-a shift he reportedly volunteered for under head coach Rahul Dravid.

Should he assume the Test captaincy, it remains to be seen whether Gill will stick with the No. 3 spot or possibly move down to the iconic No. 4 position, which has been vacant since Virat Kohli stepped away from Test leadership and has seen fewer takers since.

Meanwhile, India's hectic Test schedule against England-five matches in six weeks-means frequent squad rotation is likely, particularly among fast bowlers. That further reduces the likelihood of Jasprit Bumrah taking on a full-time leadership role in the format, as the team will need to manage his workload carefully across the series.
