Mohammed Shami has become the fastest Indian bowler to claim 200 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs), which came against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy on Thursday (February 20).
Shami achieved this milestone in his 104th ODI match, surpassing the previous national record held by Ajit Agarkar who reached the mark in 133 matches. Shami has now become the joint 2nd quickest in the world to 200 ODI wickets along with Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq, with the fastest player being Australia's Mitchell Starc, who got to the milestone in his 102nd match.

Shami's journey to this achievement has been marked by significant milestones. In January 2019, during a series against New Zealand, he became the fastest Indian to 100 ODI wickets, achieving the feat in his 56th match. Later, in July 2022, he continued his impressive form by becoming the quickest Indian to reach 150 ODI wickets.
The India pacer got two early wickets against Bangladesh as he picked up Soumya Sarkar and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The India pacer then came back and got his 200th wicket with the dismissal of Jaker Ali. The Indian pacer continued to pick two more wickets and thus completed with a magnificent figure of 5/53 in his spell.
Shami's prowess was on full display during the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where he emerged as the tournament's leading wicket-taker, amassing 24 wickets in just seven matches. He was ruled out for 14 months with injury after the World Cup 2023 and has roared back to form since his return to the Indian team.
Although Mitchell Starc did it in the fewest matches, Shami has got to the landmark wicket number with the fewest deliveries. The India pacer got to 200 wickets in 5126 deliveries, 114 less than Starc and 325 less than Saqlain Mushtaq.
Shami has now also become only the 8th India bowler to have 200 or more ODI wickets. Currently, Anil Kumble sits with the most in Indian colours.
