Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami's return to international cricket hangs in balance as he awaits fitness clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and amid that, Shami shall continue with the Bengal team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).
Despite his impressive performances in the SMAT, the BCCI remains cautious about greenlighting his participation in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series in Australia.

Shami, who took eight wickets in seven matches for Bengal in the SMAT after a year-long injury layoff, has shown signs of form and skill. However, the primary concern for the BCCI's Sports Science wing is not his bowling capability but his ability to endure the intense physical demands of a Test match.
While Shami has impressed with his bowling rhythm and fitness at the domestic level, the NCA has yet to submit a final report on his readiness. The delay has created uncertainty around his availability for the remaining Tests of the BGT series.
Various reports have suggested that Shami may not be travelling to Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy, and it looks likely at the moment.
MyKhel understands that the India pacer has already travelled with the Bengal team to Bengaluru for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy knockouts. Bengal played their group-stage matches in Rajkot and will be taking on Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal on Monday (December 9).
A source close to CAB told MyKhel that Shami has travelled with the team to Bengaluru on Friday. The India pacer picked up 3 wickets in Bengal's final group-stage match against Rajasthan and is going to feature in the knockouts barring some major issues. The source also confirmed that the pacer's participation in the team practice on Saturday will depend on coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla's evaluation, as the played may be handed a rest to manage his workload.
The domestic T20 tournament has been Shami's stepping stone and the 34-year-old may have to continue in the format for now.
