Mohammed Shami set to return for India in New Zealand ODIs? Report makes Huge Claim

By MyKhel Staff

India's selectors are poised to recall veteran pacer Mohammed Shami for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11 in Vadodara.

At 35, Shami's recent domestic exploits have reignited discussions about his role in the national setup, especially with Jasprit Bumrah likely resting ahead of the T20 World Cup. As per report from NDTV, the Bengal pacer may be handed a callup in the upcoming series.

Domestic Form Fuels Comeback Talk

Shami has impressed in the white-ball domestic circuit, securing six wickets across three Vijay Hazare Trophy matches and 16 scalps in seven Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy outings. A standout spell of 2/14 in six overs, including two maidens, helped Bengal bundle out Jammu & Kashmir for just 63 in his latest VHT game. These performances come after his exclusion despite a joint-top haul of nine wickets in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where his last ODI was the final against New Zealand in March.

A BCCI insider revealed ongoing deliberations, stressing Shami's wicket-taking prowess and experience, as it was reported.

"He is not out of reckoning. The only concern is fitness... Do not be surprised if he is picked for the New Zealand series, given his ability. Even the 2027 World Cup is a possibility," the source said.

With Shami holding India's record for most wickets in white-ball ICC events, his potential inclusion could anchor the pace attack in Bumrah's absence.

Bumrah continues to focus on T20Is

Bumrah's workload is being managed in the last few months as the India pacer has missed all the 50-over matches. He was not part of the recent ODI series against Australia and South Africa, and is set to miss the upcoming one against the Kiwis as well. Bumrah is being given rest as he prepares to spearhead India's pace attack in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
