The ISL 2023-24 season ended with a high-voltage match between this season's two best teams - Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC. With one more win, the Mariners could have made it a historic season for them with a domestic treble to their name.
They had the odds in their favour going into the final playing at their home and fortress, the Salt Lake Stadium. It's where their fans have made and broken records again and again by showing up in huge numbers. They worked as the Mariners' 12th man the entire season.

Additionally, going back a few weeks, they defeated the same Mumbai City FC at home by a 2-1 margin in the match that decided the shield winners. They became this season's champions and sealed a spot for the 2024-25 AFC Champions League 2 group stage.
Starting the Indian Super League back in September, Mohun Bagan were already considered as one of the front-runners this season. They had won the Durand Cup only a few weeks before the ISL 2023-24 started. Additionally, their star-studded squad impressed everyone.
They had some of the best skilled foreigners amd topmost Indian players amongst all clubs in the league. However, the season didn't go smoothly. One key player after another started getting injured and Mohun Bagan ended the first half of the season with a downward facing result and performance slope.
They made some drastic changes by firing their head coach Juan Ferrando and bringing in the old and reliable, Antonio Lopez Habas. Habas came with his own set of assistant coach Manuel Perez and strength and conditioning coach Alberto Liñán who turned the team's performance around drastically from the first day.
Habas was doing an unbelievable job from the first match of the second half of the season. Perez took on the job and did it in style when Habas was unwell. Additionally, thanks to Liñán, much less injuries were happening. Stumbling and fighting, they won the league shield. Unfortunately, they couldn't finish the domestic treble with the cup win.
