Most Dot Balls by a Bowler in T20I Match: Lockie Ferguson's World Record Will Never Be Broken

In an exceptional display of precision and control, New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson etched his name in the record books by delivering the most economical spell in T20I history during a Group C World Cup match against Papua New Guinea.

Ferguson's remarkable figures of 4-4-0-3 not only decimated the opposition but also saw him bowl the highest number of dot balls in a T20I match. The match, held at Tarouba, was otherwise inconsequential in terms of tournament progression, but Ferguson's performance turned it into a historic event.

With his spell, Ferguson joined an elite club, becoming only the second bowler in T20I history to deliver all four overs as maidens. The first to achieve this was Canada’s Saad Bin Zafar, who recorded 4-4-0-2 against Panama in the T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier in November 2021.

New Zealand's disciplined bowling attack restricted Papua New Guinea to a meagre 78 runs, with their innings concluding in 19.4 overs. The initial stages of PNG's innings saw boundaries being a rarity, with only four in the first half.

Trent Boult (2/14), in his final T20 World Cup appearance, and Tim Southee (2/11) complemented Ferguson's efforts, with Southee drawing first blood by dismissing PNG opener Tony Ura. Boult, despite not taking early wickets, maintained pressure, allowing Ferguson to exploit the opposition's frailties.

Ferguson's impact was immediate, removing PNG captain Assad Vala for six with his very first delivery. His relentless accuracy left the PNG batters unable to score off his first three overs. His third wicket came when he trapped Charles Amini (17) leg before. Mitchell Santner (1/17) added to PNG's woes by removing Sese Bau (12), thanks to a catch by Finn Allen.

Ferguson’s final over was as clinical as the rest, claiming Chad Soper’s (1) wicket by exploiting a loose shot that resulted in an inside edge onto the stumps. This feat underscored his dominance and precision, completing his spell without conceding a single run.

In terms of dot balls, Ferguson's tally reached an unprecedented height, surpassing previous records. The previous highest was 21 dot balls by Bangladesh’s Tanzim Hasan Sakib, who achieved this during the same tournament. Sakib’s spell of 4-2-7-4 against Sri Lanka included two maiden overs, showcasing his ability to stifle opposition scoring.

South African bowler Ottneil Baartman also featured prominently in the list of bowlers with the most dot balls, having delivered 20 dot balls against Sri Lanka in the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup. His spell of 1-9 in four overs was instrumental in bowling out Sri Lanka for 77 runs.

New Zealand’s Trent Boult matched this achievement by bowling 20 dot balls in their match against Uganda, where he finished with figures of 2-7 in four overs. Boult’s and Southee's efforts helped New Zealand skittle Uganda for just 40 runs, which they chased down in 5.2 overs.

Ferguson's record-setting performance highlights the significant impact of dot balls in T20 cricket, underscoring the importance of consistency and precision in bowling. His feat stands as a testament to the evolving strategies in T20I cricket, where dot balls are as crucial as wickets in constraining opposition scores.
