Most Expensive Spells in IPL History: Mohammed Shami Sets Unwanted Record by Indian Bowler in SRH vs PBKS 2025

Indian pace veteran Mohammed Shami on Saturday (April 12) set an unwanted feat moments before his team - Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off the second highest run chase in Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

SRH rode on Abhishek Sharma's 141 off 55 balls and Travis Head's 66 off 35 balls to chased down 246 against Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Before SRH ended the record-breaking night with a 6-wicket win to end a four-match winless run, the home side's lead pacer Shami had set a record, which does not read well for any bowler.

During the PBKS innings, Shami conceded 75 runs in four overs and went wicketless. He was hammered by pair of young openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya for 23 runs in the second over and 27 runs in the final over of the innings, including four successive sixes by Marcus Stoinis.

The most expensive figures in the history of IPL is currently held by Rajasthan Royals (RR) pacer Jofra Archer, who went wicketless and conceded 76 runs in four overs against SRH at Hyderabad earlier this season.

While Shami remained in second on the overall list, he overtook his former Gujarat Titans teammate Mohit Sharma's tally to become the most expensive Indian bowler. Shami in fact eclipsed several other compatriots to set this unwanted record of most runs conceded in an IPL innings by Indians. Here is a look at the overall list:

This season, in six matches, Shami has taken five wickets at an average of 46.60 and an economy rate of 11.09, with best figures of 2/28. The veteran Indian pacer was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 10 Crore at the mega auction last year to form a deadly combination with Pat Cummins, but the duo have failed to live up to the hype.
