Anrich Nortje bowled his most expensive expensive spell in Indian Premier League history, finishing just behind his compatriot Kwena Maphaka for the unwanted record of most runs conceded by a bowler in IPL 2024.
The 18-year-old Mumbai Indians pacer Maphaka had an horror start to his IPL career after being taken to the cleaners by Sunrisers Hyderabad in a record-breaking night in Hyderabad, where the highest total of the lucrative league was created.

The young South African conceded 66 runs in a tough outing against SRH, where he was targeted by batters Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in the initial overs, and later by Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram.
With that, Maphaka equalled the record for a foreign player with the most runs conceded in an IPL innings, joining Afghanistan's Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who had also given away 66 runs playing for Punjab Kings against SRH in 2019.
In the same SRH vs MI match, Maphaka's compatriot and Mumbai Indians teammate Gerald Coetzee registered the fourth most expensive spell in IPL 2024, while another Protea, the most experienced Nortje appears in the unwanted list twice.
Nortje, who had conceded 59 runs in 4 overs against Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring affair, was once again taken apart in the clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where he conceded 65 runs in his spell.
The 30-year-old registered the joint seventh highest expensive spell in IPL history after MI's Romaria Shepherd cut loose in the final over of the match, scoring 4 sixes and 2 fours for a total of 32 runs.
Shepherd got the taste of his own medicine in DC's reply in the same match as Tristan Stubbs took him to the cleaners and added the West Indian also to the unwanted list. Here is a look at the top 10 most expensive spells in IPL 2024:
As mentioned earlier, Maphaka's figures of 0 for 66 was the joint most expensive spell bowled by an overseas player and it was also joint third most runs conceded by a bowler in an IPL innings. Arshdeep Singh and Ishant Sharma also had given away 66 runs in their spell.
But the highest runs conceded by a bowler in IPL history is 70 runs by Basil Thampi, who created the unwanted record when playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2018.
Meanwhile, Yash Dayal also came close to breaking the record when he conceded 69 runs, but fell one run short in 2023. Here is a look at the most expensive spells in IPL so far:
Dayal had been taken to the cleaners by Rinku Singh in IPL 2023, when the GT pacer had given away 31 runs in the final over against KKR. But that unwanted feat was surpassed by Nortje when he gave away 32 runs against MI in IPL 2024.
However, those two are only the second and third most expensive final over of an IPL innings. The unwanted record is held by Harshal Patel, who had given away 37 runs in the 20th over when playing for RCB against CSK in 2021.
At the Wankhede Stadium, Harshal felt the carnage of Ravindra Jadeja, who smashed 5 sixes, a four and a double in the 20th over that also included a no ball. Here is a look at the most runs conceded by a bowler in the final over of an IPL innings:
| Bowler (Team) | Batter (Team) | Runs Conceded | 6s Conceded | 4s Conceded |
| Harshal Patel (RCB) | Ravindra Jadeja (CSK) | 37 (7 Balls) | 5 | 1 |
