Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) closed in on leaders Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the battle for most sixes by a team in IPL 2024 during the 47-run victory over Delhi Capitals on Sunday (May 12) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar smashed 3 sixes each, while Will Jacks and Cameron Green hit 2 maximums each to take RCB to 187/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Mahipal Lomror too hit one six during RCB's innings to take their tally for sixes to 141, just 5 behind SRH.

In response, stand-in skipper Axar Patel hit 3 sixes and Jake Fraser-McGurk hit 2 sixes, but DC could only manage to post 140 in the run-chase. The Capitals, who were without captain Rishabh Pant, went level with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for most sixes by a team with 125 maximums.

Earlier on Sunday (May 12), Rajasthan Royals (RR) hit a century of sixes for the season, but could not avoid defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who also went very close to a 100 maximums in the 5-wicket win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

On a wicket where runs were hard to come by, Riyan Paran smashed 3 sixes. while Dhruv Jurel hit 2 sixes and Yashasvi Jaiswal hit one maximum to help RR post a mere 141 in their allotted 20 overs.

In the run chase, Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad hit 2 sixes each, while Shivam Dube also hit a six to take CSK past the target with 5 wickets in hand and 10 balls to spare. CSK's tally for sixes reached 99.

The ongoing season has seen over 1100 sixes being struck in 62 matches, projecting to a possible breach in the total sixes for an IPL season with at least 12 more matches left to play this edition. The record stands at 1124 sixes in a 74-game season from last year.

That record is currently held by Mumbai Indians followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have both smashed over 1600 sixes. Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders have all hit over 1400 sixes.

Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad are all above 1000. Gujarat Titans and LSG, the newcomers, are hovering around the 300-mark.
