Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) stretched the lead at the top in the battle for most sixes by a team in IPL 2024, but could not avoid a thumping 8-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 1 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (May 21).
Opting to bat first in the first playoff match, SRH were put on the back foot when the leading six-hitters Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma fell very early. However, they still got to 159 thanks to knocks from Rahul Tripathi, Heinrich Klaasen and skipper Pat Cummins.

Tripathi (55 off 35 balls) and Klaasen (32 off 21 balls) hit a six each, while Cummins (30 off 24 balls) and Abdul Samad (16 off 12 balls) smashed two sixes each to end the innings with a total of 6 sixes, taking their total tally way past 160 maximums for the season.
In response, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (23 off 14 balls) filled in Phil Salt's void with a couple of maximums, but it was the two Iyers - Venkatesh (51* off 28 balls) and skipper Shreyas (58* off 24 balls), who smashed 4 sixes each to finish the run chase in 13.4 overs.
The victory saw KKR seal the IPL 2024 final berth for the fourth time, while the defeat does not mean the end of the tournament for SRH, who will now head into Qualifier 2 to face the winner of Wednesday's Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
