Mother Chitra turned fast bowler R Ashwin into a spinner

"The reason was that his mother used to watch my notes and then start advising her son."

By Sujata Sarkar

Bengaluru, Dec 1: Generally, the fathers have become the unlikely heroes behind the scenes in case of most successful Indian cricketers' early days. There are 2 shining examples in present Indian squad.

Ashwin equals Kapil Dev

One is Virat Kohli who is immensely influenced by his father late Prem Kohli. And another is Cheteswar Pujara whose father Arvind Pujara is the man behind his son's every footstep, taken in the game. Even it has been learnt that Arvind sets the focus of his son before any important match by advising his son that how he should start the innings.

Ashwini switched to spin from fast bowling after advice from his mother

Exception is also there. That is Ravichandran Ashwin, the star spinner in current Indian cricket.

Speaking over phone from Chennai recently, father of Ashwin, Ravichandran said, "I only took my son to the training and different other places for participating in the matches. But it was his mother Chitra who actually did the coaching right from his childhood!"

Ravichandran added, "I had to note down our son's performance in each and every match from his childhood. Even, I used to note Ashwin's batting and bowling performance at the nets also. I had written the comments of his coach after everyday training. The reason was that his mother used to watch my notes and then start advising her son."

Initially Ashwin used to do pace bowling. He had a long run-up. His mother asked him to turn out to be a spinner.

Ashwin's father revealed, "One day his mother told him that his long run-up did not look good at all. And it was waste of energy. Chitra asked her son to begin spin bowling instead of pace. And from that day Aswin began to concentrate on spin bowling."

According to Ashwin's father, Chitra also started making notes of her son's runs and wickets in a book when he had settled in club and state level cricket already.

And it was Chitra who once stressed by advising her son that he should never ignore his batting quality also. Today, Aswin has been getting benefit from his mother's teachings.
