MS Dhoni Captaincy Record in IPL: How Has The CSK Veteran Fared as Captain Over The Years?

By MyKhel Staff

Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League, having led the Chennai Super Kings to the much coveted title five times.

Dhoni has captained CSK to five titles in IPL and also five runners up finish, making the Indian great the only captain to reach the IPL finals ten times. As a player for now defunct Rising Pune Supergiants, Dhoni had reached the final once.

The former India captain had led CSK to the title in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Dhoni's four-time champions side finished as runners up in seasons 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019.

Dhoni, who is known for his calmness, had also led the Indian cricket team to two World Cup wins in 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 ODI World Cup at home. Apart from his role as skipper for CSK and India, Dhoni had also led RPSG.

In his IPL career so far, Dhoni has scored over 5000 runs, smashed over 200 sixes and holds the record for most caps and most dismissals in the cash-rich Indian Premier League.

The veteran skipper had stepped down from captaincy at the start of 2022 season, but took over the reigns after then captain Ravindra Jadeja left the camp mid-way through the season. Dhoni led the team to their fifth IPL title in 2023 before stepping down again in 2024.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was handed over the reins by CSK and Dhoni in 2024, but the Maharashtra batter was forced to leave the 2025 season midway due to injury, forcing the legendary captain to return for one more stint at the helm.

Apart from Dhoni, Gaikward and Jadeja, only Suresh Raina had led the Chennai Super Kings in the 16 seasons they have competed in the Indian Premier League when the veteran skipper has missed a game.

While Jadeja, Gaikwad and Raina have led the side 32 times put together, Dhoni has captained the yellow brigade in over 200 matches. Here is a look at MS Dhoni captaincy record and stats in IPL so far:
