‘MS Dhoni Fans Deserve Closure': Harsha Bhogle and Joy Bhattacharjya Weigh In on Thala's IPL 2026 Comeback
The uncertainty surrounding MS Dhoni and his possible return for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026 continues to dominate discussions, with cricket experts Harsha Bhogle and Joy Bhattacharjya now sharing their thoughts on the growing mystery.
Speaking on Cricbuzz after CSK's defeat by 7 wickets against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday (May 15) both Bhogle and Bhattacharjya discussed the emotional, tactical, and practical questions surrounding Dhoni's situation.

While the duo agreed that fans deserve clarity from CSK management regarding Dhoni's status, they also stressed that the legendary former captain would never force himself into the playing XI merely for a farewell appearance if it affected the team balance. Next up on May 18, CSK play their final home game of the season at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
'Every Year People Think It's Last Tournament for MS Dhoni'
Bhogle began by reflecting on how Dhoni retirement speculation has become a yearly IPL storyline. "Every year for the last seven years, people have been thinking it's his last tournament," Bhogle said.
The veteran commentator humorously described how rumours and media reportage around Dhoni's exit always intensify during the business end of the tournament. "MS Dhoni has got his boarding pass. MS Dhoni is in the departure lounge. MS Dhoni is not on the flight," Bhogle joked.
Yet Bhogle acknowledged why the frenzy around Dhoni continues season after season. "He's a marquee name. He's been one of the doyens of this tournament. So obviously people want to see him," he added.
Joy Bhattacharjya: MS Dhoni Fans Deserve Proper Clarity
Bhattacharjya strongly argued that CSK supporters deserve a clear indication if this is indeed Dhoni's final IPL season.
According to him, the emotional bond between Dhoni and Chennai fans means the franchise owes supporters the opportunity to give their icon a proper farewell. "His fans deserve to give him a proper farewell and know when they're giving him a farewell," Bhattacharjya said.
He added that if Dhoni's final game is approaching, fans should ideally be informed in advance so they can experience the moment properly. "I would tell them 10 days before saying, 'This could be MS's last match,'" he said.
Bhogle agreed and insisted that any farewell for Dhoni must happen at Chepauk in front of CSK supporters. "If it's a farewell, it has to happen in Chennai," Bhogle said.
Why Dhoni's Return Is Complicated for CSK
Despite the emotional appeal of Dhoni's comeback, both experts admitted the cricketing reality makes the decision extremely difficult.
CSK are currently battling for a playoff place after their loss to Lucknow Super Giants, meaning every remaining match has become crucial for Ruturaj Gaikwad's side. CSK are currently stationed at sixth spot in the points table with 12 points in as many games. The Yellow Brigade will now need to win their remaining two encounters (vs SRH on May 18 and vs GT on May 21) to book a playoffs berth.
Bhattacharjya explained that introducing Dhoni into the playing XI at such a critical stage could upset the balance of the team. "You can't just upset the balance of the team now," he said during the discussion.
The panel pointed out that Dhoni's return would immediately impact the wicketkeeping role and force batting-order reshuffles, potentially disrupting combinations that CSK have built during the season.
Bhattacharjya also noted that Dhoni himself would understand the implications better than anyone. "If it's a crunch game, he will not want to force fit himself into that situation," he said.
Dhoni Remains 'An Enigma Wrapped in a Mystery'
The biggest uncertainty, however, remains Dhoni's fitness status. There has been no definitive update on whether the former CSK captain is fully fit to play, which has only added to the speculation ahead of Chennai's final home fixture.
Bhattacharjya summed up the entire situation with a memorable line. "It's an enigma wrapped in a mystery," he said while describing Dhoni's status.
And perhaps that is why the intrigue continues to grow.
As Chepauk prepares for what could potentially be Dhoni's final appearance in yellow, fans remain caught between hope and uncertainty.
Whether he returns to the playing XI or not, the conversation around Dhoni has once again become one of the defining narratives of IPL 2026.
