BCCI has reportedly decided to retire the iconic number 7 as a tribute to the two-time World Cup-winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who sported the number throughout his international career and continues to wear it in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings.
According to reports, the Indian cricket board has informed the current cricketers to not pick the iconic number 7, meaning the number will be retired like how Sachin Tendulkar's iconic number 10 jersey was retired a few years ago.

Number 7 has been synonymous with MS Dhoni, who led Team India to the inaugural T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. He has also sported 7 in yellow with CSK, who he has led to five IPL titles.
The number 7 jersey in sport is quiet famous with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Luis Figo and Kylian Mbappe among the football stars of yesterday and today sporting the number on international duty or club football assignments.
Dhoni, who revealed the number has no superstition behind it and is only in relation to his birth date - July 7, is one name that comes to mind in cricket when number 7 is being discussed.
The former India captain, however, is not the only Indian cricketer to sport number 7 for Team India. While no cricketer from the country in the future will be allowed to pick that number, there have been two players that are fresh in mind to have worn number 7 for India before Dhoni's debut.
Former pacer and current Team India chief selector Ajit Agarkar was assigned the number 7 during the 1999 ODI World Cup, while another pacer and current ICC match referee Javagal Srinath sported the jersey number 7 for Team India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2003.
Meanwhile, current India women's captain Harmanpreet Kaur still continues wear the iconic number 7 across formats in international cricket and also in the T20 Leagues across the globe, including the Women's Premier League (WPL).
