MS Dhoni set to play for CSK in IPL 2025, may play a few matches as Impact Player | Exclusive

Former India captain MS Dhoni will play for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

MyKhel understands the CSK supremo is eager to play in the upcoming IPL season and despite the injury setbacks, Dhoni is currently maintaining a strict fitness regime to make himself available in the IPL.

CSK, although are yet to confirm their retention list, are set to place MS Dhoni as an uncapped player and will retain him ahead of the retention list deadline day, a source very close to Dhoni confirmed MyKhel.

The former India captain has been in the spotlight for his participation in the IPL 2025 but he will be kept in the books for Rs 4 crore, which was introduced by BCCI as the sum for retaining an uncapped player.

Dhoni is placed as an uncapped player as the India star retired from international cricket in 2019, which is more than five years from the IPL auction date, which allows him to be placed as an uncapped player as per the latest IPL rules. The source, who wanted to maintain anonymity, also mentions that Dhoni has been training at the JSCA training centre in Ranchi and is currently completely fit.

The 43-year-old underwent knee surgery just after the IPL 2024 but is certain to give it another go in the Yellow jersey next year. Also, MyKhel understands that Dhoni may play a few matches as an Impact Player in the upcoming season, predominantly as a batter, which is likely because of his age and injury issues. The former India captain has led the Chennai franchise to five IPL title wins, the latest of which came in IPL 2023.

Chennai Super Kings appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain last season, but Dhoni is still a mammoth figure at the franchise both on and off the field. Along with Dhoni, Sri Lanka's young pacer Matheesha Pathirana is also on the CSK list for retention, whereas all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is set to extend his stay at the franchise as well.
