Bengaluru, Dec 11: MS Dhoni top-scored with 44 runs for Jharkhand but his knock was not enough as Gujarat eased to a 6-wicket victory in a Group B match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy here today.
Dhoni was again the cynosure of all eyes at Alur ground 3 (Silver Oval) on Friday (December 11). Just like yesterday, around 100 to 150 fans came to watch India's limited overs captain.
After falling cheaply, for 9, against Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday (December 10), Dhoni improved on his score but rest of the batsmen failed. The 34-year-old Dhoni hit 4 boundaries in his 64-ball knock.
It was not the free-flowing and attacking Dhoni on view. He stared off slowly and there were no big hits right through his 95-minute innings.
The match was reduced to 47 overs per side due to a damp pitch. The contest started 45 minutes late. When Gujarat captain Parthiv Patel won the toss and sent the opposition in, Jharkhand were in trouble at 101/5. In the end, they were restricted to 177/7 in 47 overs.
In reply, Gujarat won in 40.5 overs, losing 4 wickets (179/4). Opener Priyank Kirit Panchal was the top scorer with 62 while left-hander Axar Patel remained unbeaten on 32 (42 balls, 4x4, 1x6).
The tournament takes a break tomorrow (December 12) and resumes on Sunday (December 13).
