Wankhede Stadium seat to have MS Dhoni's name in memory of 2011 World Cup final win: Report

By MyKhel Staff

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has reportedly decided to name a particular seat at the Wankhede Stadium after MS Dhoni in memory of the famous World Cup final six 12 years ago at the venue. Dhoni ended India's 28-year wait for the 50-over World Cup with a six over long-on. The MCA has decided to name the seat after the captain, where the ball landed, reported Indian Express.

MCA president Amol Kale told the daily that the spot, where the six landed in the MCA pavilion, was identified and very soon will permanently be named after MS Dhoni. Kale further added that the state board has also invited the 41-year-old cricketer for the inauguration and plans to present him with a memento.

The possible inauguration of the memorial take place in four days' time (April 8) as Dhoni will travel with his IPL team, Chennai Super Kings, to play home side Mumbai Indians. A similar idea was suggested by MCA official Ajinkya Naik back in 202 but wasn't cleared by its apex council back then.

This will be the first time that a stadium seat will be named after a player in India while Wankhede has stands named after greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Merchant.

This not the first time in world cricket though that a seat has been immortalised for a six landing on it. Australian cricket, in particular, has done it twice as Victoria batter Simon O'Donnell's 122 metre six against New South Wales was commemorated by painting a seat all yellow at the Melbourne Cricket Gournd.

Etihad Stadium in the same city had its seat painted read after Brad Hodge hit a 96-metre six for Melbourne Regade during his last match before retirement in Big Bash League.
