Multan Sultans vs Islamabad United: Islamabad United continued their dream run in the Pakistan Super League 2025 with a commanding seven-wicket win over Multan Sultans in Match 13 at the Multan Cricket Stadium.
Chasing a modest target of 169, the defending champions barely broke a sweat as Andries Gous stole the show with a match-winning unbeaten 80 off just 45 deliveries, guiding his team home with nearly three overs to spare.

For Multan Sultans, the loss adds to a string of disappointing results, leaving them anchored at the bottom of the points table. Despite a solid knock from Usman Khan and glimpses of intent from skipper Mohammad Rizwan, their total of 168/5 proved inadequate against a confident Islamabad outfit that looks increasingly unstoppable this season.
Sent in to bat, Multan Sultans never quite found the fluency they needed despite some promising individual performances. The innings was anchored by Usman Khan, who smashed a quickfire 61 off 40 balls, featuring 4 fours and 4 sixes, giving the home side a fighting total.
Captain Mohammad Rizwan once again showed glimpses of his class but failed to convert his start, falling for 36 off 37 balls. The middle order, comprising the likes of Michael Bracewell, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Chris Jordan, tried to up the ante but struggled to accelerate consistently on what looked like a slightly two-paced wicket.
Islamabad's bowlers kept a tight leash in the final overs. While none of them picked multiple wickets, their control was commendable. Riley Meredith (4-0-33-1), Shadab Khan (3-0-29-1), and Jason Holder (4-0-25-0) bowled crucial overs at the death, denying Multan a late flourish. Eventually, the Sultans finished at 168/5 in 20 overs, a total that felt below par even before the second innings began.
Chasing 169, Islamabad lost Sahibzada Farhan early, but that only brought Gous and the experienced Colin Munro together - a partnership that took the game completely away from the hosts. The duo stitched a brisk 81-run stand for the second wicket, finding the boundary with regularity and milking the spinners during the middle phase.
Munro, looking in sublime touch, smashed 45 off just 28 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. He was eventually dismissed by Bracewell, but by then the damage was done. Gous, meanwhile, carried on with a fine mix of elegance and aggression. He looked in complete control, punishing anything short and showing excellent awareness of the field.
By the time Mohammad Nawaz fell for 21, Islamabad required just a handful of runs. Saad Masood walked in to finish the formalities, while Gous fittingly remained unbeaten on 80 - his highest score in PSL and one of the most impactful innings of this season so far.
At the presentation, Gous expressed relief and satisfaction at finally converting a start. “It is a big relief. I wasn’t sure when that big knock would come, and I’m just happy it came today. The team has backed me all along. The pitch was a bit slow early, but once the dew came in, the ball began to skid, and that helped,” he said.
Islamabad captain Shadab Khan was full of praise for his side. “On paper, we’ve always had a good team, but now we’re showing it on the ground. The bowlers pulled things back beautifully in the last 5-6 overs, and we knew dew would help us later.”
For Multan, it was another frustrating evening. Skipper Rizwan acknowledged the shortcomings: “We were 15-20 runs short. The wicket changed in the second innings due to dew. We haven’t been executing our plans well. Hopefully, we can improve going forward. This was how things started the year we became champions — maybe it can happen again.”
With this win, Islamabad United have cemented their place at the top of the points table, while Multan Sultans now face a steep hill to climb. Having lost four of their five matches, they are entering a must-win-every-game scenario — a pressure environment that could either ignite a comeback or spell an early exit.
But for now, it’s Islamabad who continue to ride a wave of form and confidence, looking every bit the favourites to defend their title successfully.
