The Vijay Hazare Trophy witnessed a blistering knock from an emerging star on Tuesday (December 31).
At a mere 17 years and 168 days old, Ayush Mhatre transformed into a record-setting phenomenon in the world of cricket with an awe-inspiring inning during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024's fifth round.

Representing Mumbai against Nagaland at the prestigious Narendra Modi Stadium, the prodigious right-handed opener unleashed a staggering 181 runs from just 117 deliveries. His innings, adorned with 15 boundaries and 11 towering sixes, not only propelled Mumbai to an imposing score of 403 but also shattered the previous record held for the youngest batter to surpass the 150-run mark in List A cricket.
Previously, the benchmark was established by Yashasvi Jaiswal in 2019 when he was 17 years and 291 days old. However, Mhatre's breathtaking performance eclipsed this record, marking a new chapter in cricket's history books at an even younger age.
The foundation of Mumbai's dominant score was laid early on, thanks to Mhatre's explosive start alongside Angkrish Raghuvanshi. The duo orchestrated a formidable 156-run opening partnership, providing a clear indication of Mumbai's intent from the outset. Mhatre's exceptional knock further cements his reputation, following his noteworthy performances in the U-19 Asia Cup 2024, where he amassed 176 runs with an average of 44.
