IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians Coach Mahela Jayawardene Details Reasons Behind Disappointing Season

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene said the team slipped out of the IPL 2026 playoff race because players failed to turn talent into performances, both individually and as a unit, despite fielding four members of India’s T20 World Cup winning squad and former captain Rohit Sharma being declared fully fit.

Jayawardene stressed that Mumbai Indians, known for late comebacks in earlier seasons, could not recreate that pattern this year. The five-time champions were among the earliest sides eliminated from the playoffs fight, despite having Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma in the XI across the tournament.

Mumbai Indians collective performance and IPL 2026 campaign

Asked about the returns from those four India stars, Jayawardene refused to single them out for the overall failure. "It's not fair just to bring up (only) those four guys. As a group, a lot of the guys haven't been able to consistently perform -- that's how I see it," Jayawardene told reporters before Mumbai Indians’ final IPL 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals.

Jayawardene explained that expectations after the T20 World Cup had to be balanced with the different demands of franchise cricket. "Yes, they came from a very high level (of competition) in the World Cup and all that. (But) what you have to understand is that how you play for your national team and how you play for the IPL franchise, sometimes it is different because the personnel is different."

Mumbai Indians roles, execution and squad mindset in IPL 2026

The coach said role changes and team plans created other challenges for Mumbai Indians players returning from international duty. "The roles can be different, how you want to go about, so they had to switch up and there's nothing wrong with the effort that they put off the field training-wise and what they needed to do, and the conversations that we had with them," he added.

Jayawardene underlined that preparation did not translate into performances under match pressure for Mumbai Indians. "It's just that they were not able to go out there in the middle and execute. That is something that happens in a game of cricket and that's something we also need to understand." He said the failure to reach playoffs came from several connected issues.

According to Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians needed a long stretch of strong collective performances that never arrived. "I can't just say one thing affected, but it's a combination of a lot of things. We needed a lot of the other players and the entire squad to be in a very positive frame of mind, performing at least for seven, eight games," he said.

Mumbai Indians stars, youngsters and key numbers in IPL 2026

Jayawardene noted that past Mumbai Indians seasons often featured match-winning displays from one standout player on the day. "In the past, we had individual players winning matches by themselves and we haven't had that happening this year with the prominent players we had. That can happen." He said the side also leaned on youngsters, who struggled under pressure.

He added that lack of group impact from Mumbai Indians made matters worse. "… so that means that collectively the team has to then perform to win some matches, and that also did not happen because a lot of the players did not perform to our expectations. We tried some youngsters also, but they also struggled in the heat of the moment. It's that sort of a season and that's something that we have to reflect on," Jayawardene said.

Key Mumbai Indians players’ basic IPL 2026 numbers mentioned by Jayawardene and team officials are shown below, highlighting the mixed returns from established names in the squad.

Player Runs Wickets
Jasprit Bumrah - 4
Hardik Pandya 172 4
Suryakumar Yadav 210 -
Tilak Varma 356 -

Mumbai Indians update on Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in IPL 2026

Jayawardene clarified that Rohit Sharma is medically fit and has been used as an impact substitute mainly for strategic reasons. The former captain has been picked for India’s three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, with availability officially linked to fitness assessments by the national set-up.

Detailing Rohit’s recovery, Jayawardene said, "He had a hamstring injury, (and) we gave him the time that he needed to recover from that." He added that Mumbai Indians eased Rohit back. "The first game or so, we were cautious. Even with his batting, the way he was running, because he had to adapt slowly, gradually coming back into it."

The Mumbai Indians coach said medical staff had cleared Rohit, and selection was tactical. "But for me, with the medical team, everything is 100 per cent. We're not putting him on the field because of what we've done in the past as well -- it's just the team combination. It has nothing to do with it, and I hope that it doesn't impact whatever the conversations or whatever is happening outside this bubble," Jayawardene added.

Speaking about Hardik Pandya’s visible frustration after a dropped catch in the previous game, Jayawardene said it mirrored the mood across the Mumbai Indians camp. "It is hard not just for Hardik, but for all of us to go through a season where we know that we had the talent, we had the squad, but we were not able to execute and perform to the best of our ability," Jayawardene said, calling the campaign a period for honest review.
