Mumbai Indians Eliminated: MI's Turbulent Ride Under Hardik Pandya - From 2024 Disaster to 2026 Elimination
Hardik Pandya’s appointment as Mumbai Indians captain in late 2023, replacing the legendary Rohit Sharma, marked the beginning of a much-hyped new era for the five-time IPL champions.
The high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans was expected to bring energy and aggression, but three seasons later, the results have been mixed at best, with more lows than highs.

In 2024, MI’s campaign turned into a nightmare. Under Pandya’s leadership, the team secured only four wins in 14 matches and finished last — their worst-ever performance in IPL history. Fan frustration peaked, with Pandya being booed at the Wankhede Stadium. Despite having match-winners like Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav, the side suffered from poor batting depth and questionable tactical decisions.
However, 2025 brought a strong revival. MI climbed to 4th place with nine wins, qualified for the playoffs, and reached the Eliminator. Pandya’s improved all-round contributions and better bowling strategies helped restore some confidence and silence early critics.
Unfortunately, 2026 has repeated the 2024 heartbreak. With only three wins from 11 matches, MI found themselves mathematically eliminated from the playoff race following a heavy defeat to Chennai Super Kings. Injuries to key players and inconsistent middle-order batting have once again exposed the team’s vulnerabilities.
Hardik has been missing with an injury, and now the narrow defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru means curtains for the five-time IPL champions. It is to be seen how much of this current side take part in the upcoming IPL season, as we may witness a host of changes.
Across three seasons under Hardik Pandya, MI have recorded one last-place finish, one playoff qualification, and another early exit. While the franchise management continues to back the captain, questions remain about whether this “new era” is truly delivering for one of IPL’s most successful franchises. The wait for a sixth title continues.
