Mumbai Indians are preparing for the IPL 2025 season with significant decisions regarding their retention list, which has sparked major conversation. According to reports, the franchise is set to retain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav, leaving fans surprised as a star batter, Ishan Kishan, is reportedly excluded from the initial retention list.
However, The decision to prioritise Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya over Ishan Kishan makes much more sense as the left-handed batter has fallen out of favour with the national team recently for not playing in the domestic circuit.

Mumbai Indians have retained their core star players including, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been crucial to the team's title success over the last half a decade and beyond. However, last season they finished at the bottom of the table after winning only four out of their 14 matches under the leadership of Hardik Pandya.
Pandya, who faced boos at the Wankhede Stadium due to the team's performance, will continue to lead the side, while Rohit Sharma's legacy as a five-time IPL champion keeps him firmly in the squad.
Although Kishan's exclusion from the retention list sparks rumours if Mumbai Indians are completely parting ways with the explosive wicketkeeper-batter or retain him through Right to Match Card at the auction. As per reports, MI will use their Right to Match (RTM) card to potentially bring Kishan back during the auction. Additionally, Australian all-rounder Tim David is another player that Mumbai Indians are reportedly considering for an RTM, which could further shape their auction strategy.
The IPL retention rules allow each team to retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped and two uncapped players. If MI retain Rohit, Hardik, Suryakumar, and Bumrah, the franchise will be left with a purse of Rs 61 crore for the auction, factoring in the costs associated with retaining top-tier players. Each team is required to submit its list of retained players to the BCCI by October 31, and MI's decisions will shape how they approach the auction.
Mumbai Indians are looking to bounce back after a dismal 2024 season, and the decision to stick with their core of senior players like Rohit and Hardik shows their intent to rebuild around experienced heads. With the mega auction approaching, MI's strategy will be crucial as they aim to regain their dominance in the IPL while addressing key areas through fresh signings.
