Mumbai Indians Send Clear Message on Suryakumar Yadav Slump

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has thrown his support behind Suryakumar Yadav despite the batter's disappointing run in IPL 2026, urging patience and trust as the franchise fights to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Mumbai's inconsistent campaign has left them languishing near the bottom of the points table, and Suryakumar's dip in form has been one of the key talking points of the season. The experienced batter has managed just 162 runs from eight matches so far, with a highest score of 51, a sharp contrast to his prolific performances in previous seasons.

His current numbers - including an average just above 20 and a strike rate below his usual standards - mark a significant decline from last year, when he scored more than 700 runs across the tournament.

Jayawardene insists Suryakumar Yadav is batting well despite results

Speaking ahead of Mumbai Indians' crucial clash against Chennai Super Kings, Jayawardene said the batter's struggles are more a result of unfortunate dismissals rather than technical issues.

"We've had this conversation. Like, if you look at him batting in the middle, there are two things. Practice, he's batting well as anybody. I'm sure he was like that. And even when you go into the matches as well, he's hitting the ball well. But the way he's gotten off a few times, it's unfortunate," Jayawardene told reporters in the pre-match press conference on Friday.

Like, you know, he hits a shot, gets caught in the boundary line. A couple of times, okay, he had some good balls, came at his way, got out," he added.

Jayawardene suggested that marginal moments - including boundary catches and quality deliveries - have played a role in Suryakumar's recent dismissals, rather than any prolonged technical flaw.

'Keep trusting': Coach urges patience with Suryakumar Yadav

Drawing from his own experience as a batter, Jayawardene stressed that temporary slumps are a natural part of cricket and called for continued backing of Suryakumar's aggressive style.

"So, batsmen, me being a batsman as well, I've gone through those kinds of situations. Like, why is it happening to me? But it does happen. So, the conversations, like, keep trusting. Keep trusting your thought process. Keep trusting your ability. Back yourself in that situation. Because he's that sort of player. He's very unorthodox," said Jayawardene.

He also pointed to Suryakumar's consistent performances over the past few seasons as evidence of his ability to bounce back strongly.

"How he sees, how he plays, we keep encouraging him. And sometimes, I mean, if you look at Surya for us, he had three, four brilliant years, not just last year. So, sometimes people are human. They will have a little run that, you know, doesn't go his way. But he knows that. And he'll come up with a smile and play the same way he knows how to play," he added.

Mumbai Indians face must-win scenario amid playoff pressure

Mumbai Indians entered IPL 2026 with high expectations but have struggled to deliver consistent results despite boasting a star-studded squad.

With the team currently near the bottom of the standings, their upcoming clash against Chennai Super Kings carries significant importance. Another defeat could severely dent their chances of reaching the playoffs, making a return to form from key players like Suryakumar increasingly crucial.

As Mumbai look to revive their campaign, the franchise will be hoping their senior batter can rediscover his rhythm and lead the turnaround in the matches ahead.
