Naman Dhir: India’s Next T20 Finisher? Why Patience & Proper Grooming Could Unlock His All-Round Potential
New Delhi, Oct 23: India started their campaign against New Zealand in the best possible way, comfortably winning the first T20I against the Kiwis at Christchurch. Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer became the mainstay of India's win. However, one particular batsman ensured that the men in blue chased down their second-highest T20I, and that was Naman Dhir. The Indian spinning all-rounder, who recently shot to glory, remained not out on 42 for 15 and kept the run-vs-ball equation within grasp.
The Indian all-rounder had been waiting on the sidelines for his opportunity during the West Indies series. He already bamboozled batsmen with his handy spin. Former Indian cricketer Murali Karthik, during an interaction at a media roundtable organised by Sony, also acknowledged it: "Naman Dhir is a good cricketer to have in the squad. He offers value in three departments. He may not necessarily bowl all four overs in every T20 match, but he can provide useful overs. He has picked up wickets and, importantly, shown character."

Naman Dhir In T20Is
To gauge the extent of Naman Dhir's utility in the T20I setup, the numbers speak for themselves. Across six matches, he has scored 80 runs in five innings at an average of 40 and a staggering strike rate of 285.71, highlighting his ability to score rapidly without compromising returns. His bowling figures of five wickets in 10 overs, at an average of 22.80, further underline his value as a batting all-rounder. While the sample size remains small, his contributions in both departments offer India tactical flexibility, particularly in a format where impact often matters more than volume.
In the IPL, Dhir has established himself as an aggressive middle-order option for Mumbai Indians, accumulating 710 runs in 37 matches at a strike rate of 163.97. Three half-centuries and a highest score of 62* reflect his ability to accelerate innings and deliver under pressure. His numbers suggest a profile suited to the finisher's role, providing late-innings impetus while allowing the top order to build a platform. However, translating this franchise-level consistency into sustained international performances will be crucial to cementing his place in India's T20I plans.
However, it is his batting that has caught the eyes of the people, which came at its destructive best against the Windies in the 5th T20I and the 1st T20I against NZ.
Can Naman Dhir Solve India's Spin-Allrounder Conundrum?
The echoes have already started in the ranks, after Naman Dhir's innings, as to who makes way for the Indian allrounder. Speaking in the post-match show at Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik and Harsha Bhogle came up with a few names. "Naman has come in and delivered some very impressive, impactful performances with the bat. He has also shown considerable skill with the ball. It almost feels as though India are going to double down on Naman and Nitish Kumar Reddy as their two all-rounders," Karthik said.
That said, even if Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar's place comes under threat, BCCI will be looking to groom the young talent to solve a much larger conundrum for the Indian cricket team, which is who will be taking on the mantle after Ravindra Jadeja's departure.
Obviously, Hardik Pandya will be the front-runner to fill that option, given his ability in slam-bang cricket and the quality pace bowling that he brings with him. But injury has been the Achilles' heel for the MI skipper.
With India still searching for the right balance in its all-rounder combination, a rotational approach involving Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir, guided by pitch conditions and match-ups, could offer a practical short-term solution. However, Dhir's value extends beyond being a flexible selection option. His explosive finishing, coupled with his growing utility as an off-spinner, presents the promise of a more complete T20 cricketer. If nurtured patiently and given a clearly defined role, he could evolve into a long-term asset for Indian cricket - one on whom the BCCI can confidently build its future white-ball plans.
