Neeraj Chopra, an Olympic gold medalist in track and field, made his case for increasing the visibility and appeal of international athletics in India during his address in Bengaluru. The track and field champion expressed his views at the RCB Innovation Lab's Leaders Meet: India, as he interacted with global sports leaders.
Chopra, a Haryana-born athlete, stressed on the importance of making athletics more accessible and marketable to Indian fans. He opined that international competitions, like the Diamond League, Continental Tours, and World Athletics Championships, should be telecast live in India.

The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist javelin star noted the current scenario where fans are only able to watch highlight reels, despite their willingness to stay up late to catch live games. Broadcasting these events, according to Chopra, would not only boost viewership but also enhance understanding and awareness about the competitions athletes participate in.
The RCB Innovation Lab is an avant-garde initiative that merges the prowess and insights of international sports leaders to establish a collaborative platform. This platform encourages influential dialogues and the exchange of inventive ideas, positioning them at the heart of discussions.
The Leader's Meet: India event under this initiative offers a comprehensive overview of the current and future state of the sports industry. It advocates for and provides insights into the transformative elements that are driving India towards a new age of sports excellence and business innovation.
Chopra, who has had an outstanding year with his gold medals at the Asian Games 2022 and World Athletics Championships 2023, is expected to replicate his success at next year's Paris Olympics, following his triumphant performance at Tokyo.
Chopra further highlighted the significant strides India's sports ecosystem has made over the years. He emphasized that hosting international competitions in India could revolutionize the landscape of athletics.
Reflecting on the sentiments of fans, he asserted that if countries like Kenya and Grenada can organize international athletics competitions consistently, India also holds immense potential to do the same.
He shared that representatives from the World Athletics Organization have expressed interest in hosting such tournaments in India, fostering optimism that if India could host such competitive events, it would inspire more people to witness and participate in these championships.
Reminiscing his career highlights, the 25-year-old athlete recalled his record-breaking throw at the World Junior Championships in Poland and his life-altering victory at the Tokyo Olympics as his most treasured moments.
Chopra also spoke about his training plan as he resumed his regimen post-festival break. He humorously commented on his indulgence in hometown delicacies like milk, ghee, churma, and sweets during the break, which led to some weight gain. However, he expressed confidence in getting back in form within a couple of weeks of starting his training.
The RCB Innovation Lab's Leaders Meet: India event came to a close on November 30, marking the end of insightful discussions and exchange of ideas amongst global sports leaders.
