New Delhi, Dec 4: Shikhar Dhawan's dynamic performance lit up the inaugural Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2024, showcasing his class and star power in the much-anticipated T20 tournament.
Playing for Karnali Yaks, Dhawan smashed a stunning 72 off 51 balls against Kathmandu Gurkhas, a knock that reignited his form after a slow start in the league.

Dhawan's innings began cautiously, reaching 33 off 35 balls, but his experience shone through as he accelerated in the final overs. His blitzkrieg featured four boundaries and five towering sixes, propelling Karnali Yaks to a competitive total of 149/5. Despite his heroics, Karnali narrowly lost the thrilling contest by three wickets with just three balls to spare.
Apart from Dhawan's fireworks, only Chadwick Walton contributed meaningfully with a quick-fire 21 off 15 balls. The rest of the batting lineup struggled against a disciplined Kathmandu Gurkhas' attack, led by Gerhard Erasmus (2/29) and captain Karan KC (1/19).
Kathmandu's chase was powered by key contributions from Gerhard Erasmus (38 off 28), Sumit Maharjan (40* off 37), and a late flourish from Karan KC (28 off 10). Despite tight bowling from Karnali's Bipin Sharma (1/18), Gurkhas managed to cross the line in a nail-biting finish.
The Nepal Premier League 2024 has attracted significant international attention, featuring cricketing stars like Martin Guptill, James Neesham, and Sohail Tanvir. Dhawan's participation, reportedly earning USD 30,000 per match, has added immense glamour to the league.
Fans at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground in Kirtipur turned up in droves, creating an electric atmosphere. Their passion reflects Nepal's growing cricket culture, bolstered by the presence of global icons.
The NPL follows a round-robin format, with eight teams competing to secure a spot in the playoffs. The top four teams will advance to the Qualifiers and Eliminator, culminating in a grand final on December 21.
