Nitish Kumar Reddy, Who Came In As Shivam Dube's Replacement for Bangladesh T20Is, Showcases His All-Round Skills

Nitish Kumar Reddy's performance during the second T20I against Bangladesh marked his emergence as a promising all-rounder for India in white-ball cricket.

His ability to hit sixes, especially against spinners, was evident when he smashed leg-spinner Rishad Hossain for two consecutive sixes. Out of his seven sixes in a 34-ball 74, six were against spinners, highlighting his growing confidence in facing spin bowling.

Despite not being a natural power-hitter early in his career, Nitish's strike rate of 217 against Bangladesh suggests otherwise. His inclusion in the playing eleven was due to Shivam Dube's injury, yet he excelled in the role. During the 2017-18 Vijay Merchant Trophy, Nitish scored 1,237 runs, including a quadruple hundred and a triple hundred, showcasing his batting prowess.

Technical Improvements and Coaching

Veteran Andhra coach Nirmal Kumar noted that Nitish's technique and power-hitting abilities were refined, particularly against spinners. "We worked on his technique and power-hitting abilities, especially against spinners, against whom he, at times, got into awkward positions," Kumar told PTI. Minor adjustments were made to his bat downswing and foot placement while facing spin bowlers.

Training sessions focused on enhancing Nitish's power to convert shorter sixes into longer ones. He also practised alongside top-order batsmen like Hanuma Vihari to learn about footwork and bat swing. Kumar emphasised that Nitish's willingness to embrace challenges set him apart from other young cricketers.

Bowling Contributions and Team Strategy

Nitish's adaptability extended to bowling when his state team needed him to take on more responsibility. "We had a couple of all-rounders like KV Shashikanth but, unfortunately, they never really stepped up. So, we asked Nitish to shoulder some more responsibility in bowling and he did so gladly," shared a senior Andhra player. Against Bangladesh, he took two wickets for 23 runs from four overs.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir sees Nitish as a key player in India's future plans. A cricketer familiar with Gambhir's strategies remarked on his deep understanding of the game: "For him, stats and stature seldom matter, as he thinks what a particular cricketer can offer to his team." Nitish's IPL 2024 performance included 303 runs from 13 matches at a strike rate of 140 and three wickets.

Future Prospects and Expectations

With Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube having histories of injuries, Gambhir is keen on having a reliable third option like Nitish. The young cricketer is aware of these expectations and expressed his commitment after the Bangladesh match: "The captain and the coach asked me to bat in the same aggressive way I did in the IPL. I want to give a promise that I can do more than this."

Nitish Kumar Reddy's journey reflects his potential as an all-rounder who can contribute significantly to Indian cricket. His recent performances indicate that he is ready to take on greater responsibilities and deliver consistently at the international level.
