No tiff with BCCI, ICL to lift domestic cricket:Subhash Chandra

By Staff

Chennai, Sep 12 (UNI) Essel Group Chairman Subhash Chandra today asserted that the concept of Indian Cricket League (ICL) was not born out of any confrontation with the BCCI or the denial of telecast rights to his Zee Group of Television Network.

Addressing a press conference at the Mayajal Sports Complex, where the first batch of 58 ICL players are in a camp, Mr Chandra, who also interacted with them, said the ICL concept was with him for two-and-a-half years. ''We have, for your information, broadcast rights of four countries on the Zee Network. We will continue to bid for telecast rights with the BCCI in future also''.

He said the idea of ICL was being opposed only by the BCCI, every body else has welcomed it.

He also explained that the concept of the ICL was the first step, his group has taken to impart professionalism to domestic cricket ''Through ICL, we will raise the level of domestic cricket than ever before,'' he said.

Asked about BCCI's statement that no ICL player would be selected to play for India, he said ''it is upto them. We have no restriction on our players playing in BCCI tournaments.'' Ignoring criticism of the ICL, especially by the BCCI that only players on the verge of retirement were with it, he said ''If some people have problems with the ICL, I do not know.'' Asked how much he planned to invest in the ICL, Chandra said there would be a total investment of Rs 100 crore. So far, Rs 15-20 crore had been invested.
