Not Only Pakistan! These 3 Host Nations Were Also Knocked Out In First Round Of Champions Trophy

Pakistan's campaign in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 came to an end after New Zealand secured a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Group A clash at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Following their must-win defeat to India in Dubai, Pakistan's semi-final hopes rested on Bangladesh pulling off a stunning upset against an in-form New Zealand side.

However, the BlackCaps, riding on their strong momentum, made light work of the chase to claim their second win of the tournament. With this result, both Pakistan and Bangladesh bowed out of the competition, while India and New Zealand advanced to the semi-finals from Group A.

But if we look at the past editions, the Men in Green aren't the only host nation, who bowed out from the very first round of the competition. They are the fourth nation-ever to achieve this unwanted record and the second Asian team to do so.

Here's a look at the other three teams who bid goodbye in their very first round of the coveted competition.

1) Kenya: In the year 2000, Kenya hosted the then ICC KnockOut Trophy. It was an attempt from the ICC to help popularise cricket in the African nation. The tournament started with the pre-quarters, where Kenya went head to head with India. Batting first, Kenya scored 208/9 and the Men in Blue chased down the target in 42.3 overs, knocking the hosts out of the tournament.

2) India: The Men in Blue were the hosts of the competition in 2006. The Rahul Dravid-led side were pitted against Australia, West Indies, England in the group. After starting off with a win against England, the hosts lost their way and conceded back to back matches against eventual Champions Australia and West Indies to bow out from the group stage.

3) South Africa: The Proteas hosted the tournament in 2009 and were drawn against New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka in the group phase. The Africans started off the tournament with a loss on the hands of the Lankan Lions, came back strongly against New Zealand before losing to England narrowly to bow out of the tournament.

The Men in Green were the only defending champions of the competition that went out in the first round itself in the following edition.
