Not Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli! Shai Hope creates unique World Record with Century against New Zealand

By MyKhel Staff

West Indies captain Shai Hope has created a unique record in their recent match against New Zealand, which is currently untapped by any other cricketer in the world.

Shai Hope delivered an impressive unbeaten 109 in the rain-shortened second ODI against New Zealand, although his exceptional performance couldn't prevent the hosts from winning by five wickets with three balls to spare.

Playing on a pitch that helped bowlers with pace and movement, Hope's 69-ball century propelled the West Indies to 247 for 9 in the 34-over match held in Napier.

Hope's innings was remarkable not only for its timing but for the records it set. This century marked his first against New Zealand and brought his total ODI hundreds to 19, matching Brian Lara's tally and placing him second on the West Indies all-time list, behind Chris Gayle who leads with 25.

In a unique achievement, Shai Hope became the first cricketer to score a hundred against all 12 Test-playing nations in international cricket, spanning all formats of the game. This feat stands out as former Indian greats like Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar hadn't recorded centuries against all current Test-playing countries-Dravid scored centuries against all 9 nations during his career, with Afghanistan and Ireland only gaining Test status after he retired, and Kohli never scoring a century against Ireland.

Additionally, Hope surpassed 6,000 ODI runs, becoming just the seventh West Indies player to do so and the second fastest from the Caribbean, reaching this milestone in 147 matches behind Viv Richards. This innings further cements his status as one of West Indies' top ODI performers.
