A gigantic tragedy...The utter misfortune and cruelty! That only comes to mind from the Indian perspective when the ICC World Cup 2023 Final reminisces.
A day that was supposed to be auspicious, turned out to be a nightmare for the Indian billion as team India suffered and succumbed at the grandest stage of all. November 19, 2023, is etched in the memories of Indian cricket fans as a day of heartbreak.

After a flawless run through the ICC Cricket World Cup, India faced Australia in the final in Ahmedabad. In front of a raucous home crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Men in Blue stumbled. Their total of 240 runs, despite strong contributions from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, proved insufficient against the Aussies, led by Travis Head’s match-winning century.
The Aussie rejoice was greeted with almost silence and a half-empty stadium in Ahmedabad.
India entered the final as favorites, riding high on ten consecutive victories, including dominant performances against top teams like England, South Africa, and Pakistan. Virat Kohli, who delivered consistently throughout the tournament, was awarded Player of the Tournament for his record-breaking contributions. Rohit Sharma, too, had been in sublime form as a leader and batter. The bowling was spot on while the team as a unit was sublime. The entire nation had a notion and a dream that the elusive third World Cup title is coming home. But Alas! How wrong we were.
A slow pitch caught India off-guard, and after a decent start, the team faltered. Wickets fell at crucial moments, and the team struggled to accelerate. Kohli and KL Rahul built a promising partnership, but dismissals at crucial times restricted India to a modest total. Australia, known for peaking in high-pressure games, capitalized on this vulnerability. India made a superb start with three early wickets, but as the entire nation was dreaming for a miracle, Travis Head turned Australia’s saviour. Head’s aggressive batting, supported by Labuschagne, ensured that the Australians chased the target comfortably. The silence of the home crowd in the latter stages of the game was deafening - a visceral reminder of what could have been.
The entire nation cried on that day. Along with those teary-eyed players, the two billion plus eyes were drenched. The giant screens arranged at the localities were turned off, friends who got together to watch the Indian team win sulked with their TV sets off, grown-up people were crying inconsolably. Kolkata to Kutch, Kashmir to Kanyakumari was shocked to the core – those celebrating Australian players sucked out the life of more than a billion.
Amid the adversity, rises the strongest. And the Indian cricket team has done so in the past year. Today, 19th November 2024 is a completely different day but if we are to scissor the journey of the last 366 days, it has been only an upheaval for the Indian team with a few recent bumps.
The past year has been a journey of introspection and renewal. Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, India’s coach, emphasized learning from the experience rather than dwelling on it. Their first step was addressing the middle-order fragility that surfaced during the World Cup. Youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma were integrated into the team, bringing fresh energy and fearless intent. The return of Rishabh Pant has significantly strengthened India’s batting as well.
Bowling, too, saw a revamp. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami remained the cornerstones of the pace attack, but there was a conscious effort to groom younger bowlers like Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.
In the last on year, Indian cricket has taken some gigantic steps forward. It isn’t just about wins, it is about how India approached the games—with aggression, adaptability, and unity.
India won the Test series at home against England, did reasonably well in South Africa earlier this year. But the moment of true redemption arrived at the West Indies.
Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma had their last hurrah together in the T20 World Cup. And after scintillating performances across the tournament, the Indian team emerged victorious in the Final in Barbados, at the expense of South Africa, thus ending their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, 13-year hiatus for a World Cup.
The entire nation was in frenzy mode as Rohit Sharma and co lifted the title. The subsequent celebration in Mumbai dazzled the world, as almost a million serenaded the victorious team in the streets of the City of Dreams.
As the one-year anniversary of that fateful day is marked, the Indian team stands in a better position. Despite the recent blues against New Zealand, the team looks more balanced, more prepared, and hungrier than ever. The new head coach Gautam Gambhir has big shoes to fill in, and the general notion is that he will live up to the task.
While the scars of November 19, 2023, remain, they now serve as a reminder of cricket’s unpredictability and its ability to inspire growth. For fans, it’s a day to remember the pain but also to celebrate the positive aftermath which has graced the Indian team.
The journey from heartbreak to healing is far from over, November 19 shall always make us wonder on 'How it Could have been’. But India’s last year has proven one thing: the fire burns brighter after being tested in the fiercest of battles. As the popular phrase says – It is always the darkest before dawn.
That unceremonious night in Ahmedabad shall remain at one corner of the heart as a piece of nightmare, it is fine to keep it like that. Apart from the OTD’s (On This Day) in years to come, it doesn’t need to be reminded of. We are allowed to grief, but team India, in the last year has made sure that it’s just for the day only.
